Any noticable loss of water flow or pressure?

I'm thinking of buying/installing the GE GXWH40L, but was wondering if anyone who has installed this noticed any decrease in water pressure or flow?

Why can't we open our system to change filter, so dirty we had to turn it off. Not turning at all, locked

Asked by: LL
Hi LI- Before removing, turn the water off to the filter and then turn the control Handle to the BYPASS or OFF position. Press the RED pressure release button to release the pressure. Use the filter wrench and turn clockwise to remove. Customer Reviews

Whole House Water Filtration System is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 210.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A very good water filter. We kept getting water that seemed to have particles in it. We have city water and thought that it was no biggie. But - I decided to install this household filter system. The first time after installation we noticed that the showers did not have the chlorine, cool. Also after about 2 1/2 months it turned almost black and water pressure had reduced. . no biggie I replaced the filter. It was doing its job. Now for a surprise. About 2 weeks later it was really black and water pressure had went down. I thought that I had bought a bum filter. Replaced it and all was well. A couple of days later I found out the city had worked on the main water line. . . dirty water ran amuck. . our whole house and hot water heater would have suffered, except we had that filter. . . . yeaaaaa. Was easy to install. Plumbing knowledge needed. Yes it does its job. Just a slight drop in water pressure, no biggie. It is a neat clean system, filters are easy to replace. Rated 4 out of 5 by from 1 in. High Flow Clear Water Filtration System I have a reverse osmosis water filtration system under the kitchen sink and the water taste is very good with no complaints, but the filters have to be changed almost twice a year due to the very hard water, so I installed a 1 in. High Flow Clear Water Filtration System in the main line as its starts into the house which is in the garage, I had to cut the main line and solder two copper connectors and adds some extensions, the filter is not hard to install but you do need to have some plumbing experience since you will be taping into the main line. I also installed a ¾ turn emergency shut off valve before the connection to the filter just in case. I did notice when changing the sediment filter you have to have a good grip cause it kinda hard to open, overall the filter is working great and you can see all the contaminants that it’s capturing. The filter has an indicator light to let you know when it needs replacement and it only cost you less than $20 dollars but it will save you money in the long run.

(Value rating above is IF the filter worked, which it did not - at all - for us) Something doesn't add up. We bought this filter and it would not allow water to flow through either in Filter position or Bypass position. I'm curious to know if anyone else has found this same problem. We used the GE-branded FXHSC filter element, recommended for this system. The fit seemed odd - there didn't seem to be any way the filter element was restrained in the housing. It looked like there was nothing that would separate the inside of the filter from the outside. I saw this with and without a filter element; with the switch in Filter or Bypass position. I would open the valves on both sides of the filter system, the pressure on the inlet side rose to system pressure (same as at the pressure tank), while the outlet side had no pressure, and no water flowed out. The clear "bell" or whatever it's called filled with water, but no water out of the outlet! I talked to GE tech support, who had very little to offer - "Is the water supply connected to the IN connection?" (Yes). "Is the switch in the Filter position?" (Yes). The plumbing for this is not that complicated. There's not that much that could be done wrong in installing it, and we double checked everything. I would be curious to know if others have had defective systems? Or if there was something we missed that we did wrong.... just can't imagine what we could have missed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Heavy duty House water filter. This is an expensive water filter and is worth every penny. I put this water filter in before the water softener and the result is less salt being used in the water softener. Since this is a new community we have a new community well, with dangerous levels of iron in the water. After about a week the water filter started turning a burnt red. The more setament the filter traps the better the water filter does it's job. The other thing I like about the filter is it is a clear plastic so you can see it is doing it's job. It also comes with a 90 day timer to remind you it is time to change out the filter. People in the older communities are having to replace there pipes because of iron and setament in the pipes at a cost of $40,000! The filters are $30 each or $120 a year. Even at a cost of $3,600 for 30 years still beats $40,000 and the aggravation of having to replace the pipes!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Hard filter change, leaky bypass and short warranty The unit does do the job, the filter starts to turn orange almost immediately and after 2-3 months, it's completely covered in iron particles giving it the color of rusted metal. But the filter housing unit (clear canister) is extremely hard to remove even with lubricant (food grade) applied to gasket and it would be next to impossible for anyone that isn't very strong to do so. Potential future problems would be the head unit (part that connects to plumbing) breaking due to repeated forcible canister removal for filter changes. Another problem is that after about 6 filter changes, the bypass valve is leaking more with each filter change and there is no replacing it according to GE. Their recommendation is to turn the water off completely which is not a big issue for myself as the unit is installed immediately after the shut-off valve in the basement. The timer has never worked not even right out of the box. The warranty is only one year (return to retailer for exchange with new or refurbished unit) with no option to purchase an extended warranty so I would not recommend this unit.

I really appreciate the bypass options built into this filter, so I can replace the filter cartridge without turning off water to the whole house. The only down side is that the little reminder light it comes with doesn't seem to be working properly. I have reached out to GE and am awaiting a response. This doesn't affect the operation of the unit, just requires me to track when the filter needs to be replaced.

Bought additional filters that said they fit "most" 10 inch filter systems. Unfortunately, they are about 1/8" too long and get slightly crushed when installed. However, the one I installed, in spite of minor crushing, seems to be working just fine. If I need more filters I will make sure they fit the GE unit. The bypass valve worked well when changing filters.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GE GXWH40L Whole House High Flow Filtration System EXCELLENT UNIT. This unit when properly installed removes chlorine, iron, and sediment. Had unit installed by a Plumber on 8/21/14. This GE Unit comes with a heavy-duty mounting bracket which a competitive unit does not provide for the same price. Decided to have a Plumber do the install, instead of myself. The Plumber had no issues with the unit install. Some previous reviews complain about not being able to buy replacement O Rings etc. Not true. If one read the directions, on page 2, item #4 gives you the GE Parts and Service number to order the recommended Silicone Grease....and when I asked the Customer Svc. Rep about a replacement O Ring, they gave me the part # WS03X10039 which I ordered two. I recommend flushing your Water Heater before installing the filter to rid the system of built up sediment etc. I also recommend using the FXHTC FILTER. It is more expensive but wll do a better job of filtering your water. After the install, my whole house water system is 100% better.....no municipal chlorine water smell or red iron discoloration in sinks, showers, or toilets.
