Questions & Answers

My home is about 1500 sq ft and 4 people living. My average water usage is 3750 gallons/month. I tested my water using a home depot kit and all the contaminant levels seem to normal or close to normal. Is this the right system for my home? Thanks.

Will it remove rust from well water?
    ByMay 28, 2025
    1 Answer |
    Answer This Question

This whole home filtration system is only designed to remove chlorine taste and odor along with sediment, as shown in this guide: https://images.thdstatic.com/catalog/pdfImages/f5/f5ac99c6-6659-49fc-a6dc-04747ef88175.pdf -- Iron present in water is measured in parts per million (PPM) and is sometimes called "rust". The total PPM of iron and the different types of iron are determined by chemical analysis. Water may contain one or more of four types of iron: 1. Ferrous or clear water iron 2. Ferric or red water iron 3. Bacterial and organically bound iron or 4. Colloidal and inorganically bound iron (ferrous or ferric iron). -- Ferrous (clear water) iron is soluble and dissolves in water. It is usually detected by taking a sample of water in a clear bottle or glass. A water softener such as GE SmartWater system softeners will remove moderate amounts of this ferrous (clear water) iron. -- To treat an iron problem other than moderate amounts of "clear water" iron, consult a local water dealer or distributor. For more details, search for the article titled “Water Systems Iron in the Water” in the Support section of our GE Appliances website. Lauren@GEAppliances

Is this unit rated for suction? Can it be installed on the suction side of a well pump?
          ByMay 4, 2025
          1 Answer |
          Answer This Question

Whole-house water filters are not recommended to be used on the suction side of a well pump and are not rated for suction. They are always designed to be installed on the pressure side of the well pump. This way, the pump pushes the water through the filter, and the pressure is more manageable for the filter system and the pump. -Vikki@GEAppliances

                  centering the filter element
relatively easy install. nice to have a bypass valve so filter element can be changed without shutting down and draining the system. my only issue is when tightening the canister, the filter element seems to compress and twist. the element is definitely centered on/over/in the 'nub' on the bottom of the housing. but the top of the housing is flat so really nothing for the filter to center on.

It’s big and heavy. Seems well made. I like the built-in shut off and bypass feature and pressure release button. I piped my own bypass too.

Zip, zero, zilch smell of chlorine or chorlamine. Filter color after 22 days after install. This is what city water pumps into your casa. Hope this abates the loss or resin in the water softener.

                        Good to Go
In the past, I have noticed a strong chlorine smell at times at my household faucets. I wasn't sure about any sediment or rust problems with the city water that I am on though. When learning that over-chlorinated water can cause resin failure in water softeners, that hastened this purchase. And yes I have softener problems. If you have read carefully, you will know that filters are not included with this product. I spent sub two hundred dollars on this and the rest of the components that I needed. As my house is ran in PEX, I already had the tools and some of the fittings, and only needed some shut-offs, 90s, crimp rings, and 1" brass fittings. That price included two of the FXHTC filters by the way. The product is solid and appears to be well built. It is larger than I remembered when I pulled it out at the store to inspect it. At home, the installation is straightforward. Screw the mounting plate to the head unit. I mounted mine to a lateral joist across from my main 3/4 line after the pressure reducer. I wanted the ability to bypass this unit (even though this has a built-in bypass) in case the system and or bypass fails. I was up and running in just over an hour taking my time. Within days the filter started to change color and a few particulates are visible. The water tastes and smells better and we will see how that goes over time. This has been installed for just under two weeks. I adjusted my regulator up a skosh and have not yet noticed a decrease in water pressure at all when checking against a gauge on an outside spigot. I am pleased and would recommend this product.

High-end (expensive) whole house water filtration system - need a few months to see if the value is there
Installation was pretty straight forward, instructions were adequate, except for the filter installation part. One of the "push-on" type fittings did not seal the first time and had to be removed and reinserted. Installed in conjunction with a water softener and additional fittings had to be purchased. SmartHQ (IOS) application is a little janky. Frequently hangs and or displays "loading" and needs to be shut down and restarted.

This housing is SO MUCH BETTER than the housing of another popular brand it replaced. Here are just a few of the features I like that you don't find on other units: -Bypass/off valve: This saves you from having to install a bypass loop -Clear housing so you can see how dirty your filter is -Clear housing so you can see how well your filter fits as your installing it -An O-Ring that fits -Hand-tightens with no leaks It also has some electronic thing with a battery. I haven't messed with that yet, but it's probably cool too.
