Our home standby generators are designed to supplement the utility during brief power outages and should not be used as a primary source of power for off-grid applications. Using a home standby generator as a primary source of power will compromise warranty coverage: https://support.generac.com/s/article/Can-My-Home-Standby-Generator-Be-Used-as-the-Primary-Source-of-Power-for-My-Home An exception to this is our EcoGen generator, which is designed to backup alternative energy sources. To learn more about recommended back up power solutions for your unique application, we encourage you to connect with a Generac-authorized service dealer in your area: https://www.generac.com/home-standby-generators/dealer-locator/
Hello, Edward. Recommended battery specifications are: 12-volt, Group 26R with at least 540 CCA or Group 35 AGM with at least 650 CCA. If you live in a cold climate, a battery with higher CCA (cold cranking amps) is recommended to ensure ample starting power when the temperature drops. You can purchase a battery at most home improvement or auto parts stores.
Thanks for your question, David! We require a minimum of 18 inches of rear clearance between the generator and your house. Additionally, NFPA requirements dictate there should be no operable windows, doors, vents, window wells, or openings in the wall are permitted closer to any point of the generator than what is permitted by locally adopted codes. Minimum clearance from the front and ends of the generator is 3 feet, which includes brushes, shrubs, and trees. We also require a minimum of 5 feet of overhead clearance.
Great question, Pete! The size of the fuel line you’ll need depends on the size of your generator, the distance between your generator and the fuel source, what kind of pipe you’re using, and local code requirements. To ensure your generator is installed correctly with all these variables taken into account, we recommend scheduling a free no-obligation in-home consultation with your local Generac dealer here: https://www.generac.com/prepare/installation/
Yes, a 200-amp ATS (automatic transfer switch) can be used with 250-amp utility service. The rule is: The ATS amperage must be equal to or less than the amperage of the home's utility service. A 200-amp transfer switch is less than 250 amps, so it meets that requirement. However, keep in mind that the 200-amp ATS will only cover up to 200 amps of your home's electrical load, not the full 250-amp capacity of your service. See here for more information: https://support.generac.com/s/article/Automatic-transfer-switch-compatibility-guide
