Questions & Answers

What about using for 6"x6" timber retaining wall?
ByNov 12, 2025
1 Answer |
Answer This Question

Yes, these structural screws are suitable for fastening large timbers like 6x6s, including layering and securing corners or tie-backs in a retaining wall. For best results, pre-drill in dense or dry timbers, and target at least 2–3 inches of embedment into the receiving member. Use 2–3 screws per connection, staggered and set back from edges and ends to minimize splitting, but follow your local code or engineer’s spacing requirements. The exterior coating is designed for pressure-treated lumber; in coastal or highly corrosive environments, confirm compatibility or consider stainless options. Retaining walls over common height thresholds or carrying surcharge loads typically require engineered designs—check local requirements or contact CAMO support at (616) 538-8000 or customerservice@camofasteners.com.

    Star screws
I received the product in a timely manner, and it was packaged very well. The product itself was also packaged very well! It's in a nice sturdy plastic container and labeled very well! You can see what's in it. The screws are very well made and strong! The finish on them is excellent. It also comes with a T30 star drive bit. All you need is a drill or impact driver and your ready to go!! All Camo products are very good in my opinion.

    1/4” screws
These are excellent screws. I’m a cabinetmaker so I don’t use these a ton but they are clutch when I need them. I’ll use these for mounting 2x material that will support a lot of weight - typically for large range hoods, fridge enclosures that have an upper cabinet, etc. These sink deep and fast, drive well, never strip out, and hold a lot of weight. I have yet to snap one - even when we do structural stuff.

    Not what I expected
I ordered these 1/4 x 8" screws expecting to rebuild a dogear fence. When I experimented with the stacked 2x4's I would be using I was disapointed that they split. Being 8" long, I did not have a pilot drill bit that could go through 3-2x4's and a fence board. The product discription claimed that with the "dual slash" that a pilot hole was not needed. However as you can see from the picture it split my test pieces. Because I was not able to use these as I had hoped, I repurposed them as hanger brackets in my shop. The smooth shank provides a nice surface for my hanging materials. Maybe with the right (long) drill bit these screws would work. They are very strong and smooth for there size.

    ideal for outdoor structural integrity
First off, these flat head screws are fantastic because they are reusable for timber work. One can easily unscrew them and change locations/angles unlike with nails or spikes. Removing an 8-inch let along a 10-inch spike is almost impossible. I wish I had used these decades ago when I built my garden walls. Now that many of the smaller timbers have decayed a bunch, rebuilding the walls are a big pain. This first project was just using one screw to attach an old small timber wall to a new railroad tie wall. The set comes with the needed T-30 Star Drive bit which most of us will not have. Also, the Flat Head is large for added strength.

    Only the best
I love these fasteners they have a wide pan head and very coarse threads and they lock every joint together with maximum efficiency. I didn’t have any issues with the protective coating cracking or chipping off while fastening. When fastening white oak beams together none of the holes stripped out, every screw locked into place perfectly. None of the heads stripped out either, which has been a problem in the past. These fasteners made building with post and beam way easier. They really put my mind at ease, feeling how solid and sturdy everything was.

1/4 in. x 8 in. Star Drive Flat Head Multi-Purpose Structural Wood Screw - PROTECH Ultra 4 Exterior Screws, I had no idea that this type of screw was available in so many different lengths. The eight inch was a perfect choice for my carry-all on the back of our tractor when adding a 2x2 to install a trailer ball for towing a wood splitter around our property. The coating that resists rust is a plus, I suggest rubbing wax on the threads for ease of installing with an impact driver. We are extremely happy with the results!

    Go Camo!
I needed a special fastener for an outdoor handrail made from a log chewed by a Beaver. The Camo flathead screws were just what I needed for strength and aesthetics. One attachment point required a shorter fastener and so I used a competitors product that I had on hand in the length I needed. The Camo (although longer) went in easier (requiring less torque) than the competitors. The Camo screw caused no splitting of this old log and the flat head blended in well.

    10 inch screws
These are some long tough looking oversized deck screws 10 inches long. I will use them on my weight bearing deck supports. I didn't measure but the threads are only roughly 3 inches with a knurled area above the threads it says to reduce driving torque. I know these will put a drive with my impact tool. I only have ten posts that I figure need such a support for shear strength. Comes with a drive bit in this 10 pack.

    Very Nice Screw Kit
These screws start in the wood very easily and screw into the wood without much problem considering there size and length. You get 10 screws and one T30 torx bit in the kit. They say that the screws are 8" long which, is what I measure, however they call them 1/4" (.25") diameter, but that is the diameter of the threaded part of the screw, the shaft is right at 3/16" (.18") not 1/4". They also claim that this screw is a replacement for a 3/8" lag screw, I am not sure how that could be? Despite this they screw 2 4"x4" cedar posts together tightly, the design pulls the two pieces together very well. They also ran into an 8" creosote railroad tie with no problems. I didn't have any thick hardwood to try them on, but the ran through a 3/4" piece with no trouble. The flutes on the underside of the head are supposed to help with countersinking the head and seem to work just fine. It seems to me the flutes would also help with keeping the screws from backing out, but I can not say for sure. The bit that is supplied with the screws is a nice touch and seems up to the task of driving in the 10 screws with very little wear to the bit.

When the longest regular screw is just not long enough!
A couple of years ago I replaced the 2x8 top rails around my deck. I used 3 inch and 5-inch wood screws to join the outside corners, and they worked great at keeping the outside corners of the rails together. But the inside corner of the joint opened as it dried. I got these 1/4-inch x 10-inch T-30 Star Drive Flat Head Multi-Purpose Structural Wood Screws to draw the inside corner closed. I wish I had picked up a 10-pack of these PROTECH Ultra 4 Exterior Coated screws a couple of years ago because they worked like a charm at drawing up the inside corner gap. If they were installed 2 years ago, I may not have had any gap whatsoever! The included T-30 star drive bit was very much appreciated as all of the other star drive screws I use require a T-25 star drive bit. Although these 10-inch long screws do not need pilot holes, I found that I needed a few inches of pilot hole to hit a 1-1/2 inch target about 7 inches away. Highly Recommended.
