how soon after painting does the tape have to be removed?

I finished painting my living room ceiling, waited about 20 minutes and attempted to remove the tape. most of it came off, but have to back with razor blade to get the rest off of the hardwood trim . Also, can i leave it on after priming , wait for primer paint to dry, finish paint the room and then remove the tape?
Asked by: bullhead
You should remove the tape prior to paint completely drying to avoid pulling paint from area. remove tape while paint is tacky for best results. Pull tape towards the painted area and not away.

How well will this tape work on watercolor paper? I have tried many different brands of blue tape and they all either stick to the paper but not the surface I try to stick it to, or not keep my paper down as it warps when I paint.
Asked by: saltfish
I don't think it will work. This tape is not sticky. I had to use more on the same area over and over again .

I use 3M ScotchBlue original in fabricating projects as a temporary marking surface: Example: when working with parts for a plywood, lumnber or PVC project, I often start by coating my stock with a layer of this tape. Then I mark guide lines on the tape for cuts or holes to be made. Then I can remove the tape and any evidence of my temporary markings after cuts have been made. In my use of masking tape as a layout/planning tool, I need plain tape so I can draw my temporary guidelines lines without interference from irrelevant and counterproductive (to me) 3M marketing graphics on the tape that 3M marketed for a year or two until recently. I finally found the "original" plain blue tape a month or so ago [September 2019] and loaded up on a bunch of rolls after this "original" version. I an now relegate my few remaining 3M tape rolls with irrelevant 3M marketing graphics on the tape to my (extremely rare) use as masking tape.

As a 30 plus year painting contractor who has always had access to the Intertape brand of tapes, 3M blue tape is the absolute worst tape a person could use for painting. I've recently relocated and no longer am able to use the tapes I've used in the past. For the first time, I've been using the Scotch blue tape. This stuff is terrible. It sticks to itself and your fingers better than it sticks to surfaces. It's so curly and sticks so poorly that it ends up curling off the surfaces you've prepped for spray. It has no consistency in its manner. One roll will pull as expected and the next roll will pull in 2 inch tears. The edge too rigid and doesn't allow it to be stretched to exacting tolerances. It tears before it stretches. Even as an everyday tape, it sucks. Today, I used four strips of 2 inch blue tape to hold a furnace filter in place against a clean metal surface. The tape failed and the filter dropped within 4 hours. There was a piece of Intertape PG-29 that I had used on the last filter still attached to the furnace from 2 months ago. I pulled it off and re-used it. The PG-29 tape will hold for as long as it needs and pull clean it needs to. I am shocked that a company like 3M, ...that professes to specialize in tapes would have such a horrible, unusable product that actually makes painting work more difficult. Notice how the tape has failed in picture. This should have remained sealed until we pulled it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Pulled paint and paper off sheetrock. I installed this tape 20 days after the room was painted so the painter could start on the trim. It was on overnight. The painter showed up in the morning and mentioned that he did not need painters tape since he had a steady hand. As I began to remove it, the tape pulled paint and paper off. No rhyme or reason. Some spots the tape came off great no residue or paint removed. Needless to say I have multiple spots that have to be spakled and painted. Very disappointed.

Works great because it's roller thick, which means you will hardly ever hit the ceilings with this tape on the ceiling lines. It seals like blue tape, and if you paint a lot, you'll agree that you have to double cut in the edges, first with ceiling color and base board color to seal the tape edge with the color on the other side( ceiling/baseboard.) Then cut in with the wall color and you get a perfect line. A little extra work, and that's why the 4 stars.

I was able to easily apply and remove it unlike other brands I had used before to try and save a penny or two. To ensure my ability to use the product, I watched a quick painting and saw how they removed the taped BEFORE the paint completely dries to get a smooth line. It made a HUGE difference in the finish product. I would recommend this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Painter's Tape Out There I have used exclusively Scotch Blue Painter's Tape because it does the job with no fuss. It leaves the other "green with envy" with the crisp lines and no bleeding. I highly recommend that if you are painting and need crisp edges and value for your dollar, buy Scotch Painter's tapes! I wasn't using this product for painting; I was using it to mark lines for quilting. The adhesive was the right amount, and was easy to remove when I was ready. I dont think that this tape would damage the existing paint during removal. This tape comes in several widths which is convenient for painting as well as quilting!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tape functions well for many uses beyond painting I use this and similar tapes for whatever purposes arise, not just for painting. It is a good general-purpose tape for temporarily holding things in place or for temporary repairs. I reviewed it several years ago and my opinion has not changed.
