Questions & Answers

Should this pipe be glued? Can it? I'm using it for a french drain and don't want to worry about it coming apart.

Asked by: Dan
These pipes snap together "bell end" to "plain pipe" securely enough that I'm confident that for my French drain a straight run will stay together fine. Though my HD clerk also told me it can be glued with PVC cement I believe that's wrong. Generally Polyethylene (HDPE) cannot be glued except with exotic adhesives specific to it. Interestingly, for one kind of repair the manufacturer recommends welding, or if you really must use adhesive, use "an epoxy suitable for Polypropylene bonding [such as] 3M® Scotch-Weld or Acrylic Structural Plastic Adhesive DP-8005." (Note, some ADS products are made of PP, which is similarly difficult to glue). An ongoing concern I do have with my own project is connecting securely with a thin wall PVC connector I need for a 22.5 degree turn - as these couplers lack the "bell and spigot" snapping feature that holds straight sections together. I will probably resort to screwing or plastic riveting the connection though encasing it in concrete is another option. Much info can be found at http://www.ads-pipe.com for instance the quote below: "Smoothwall Pipe is available in 10' (3m) lengths; 3", 4" and 6" (75,100 and 150mm) diameters, and joins with simple, secure bell–and–spigot connections. The pipe is made with a white, high density polyethylene layer around a black polyethylene core to form a lightweight pipe with excellent beam stiffness."

Can this triple wall pipe go under my driveway? It will be 12in to the top of the pipe below grade. Also I will be using 1in river rock with some fines (about 1/8in) for about 9in of fill, with about 3in asphalt over the fill.
Asked by: kenny
Manufacturer specs a minimum of 12" of material above the pipe if you will drive on it.

Why is this called "2 hole"? I see more than two holes in the photo.

Asked by: jbclem
Because there are two parallel lines of holes all along the length of the pipe. For a French Drain application, the holes are meant to point downward. As the trench and gravel bed become filled with water, the water moves up through the holes and into the pipe. The 'drop' or downward slope of a properly dug trench will then carry the water through the pipe to the exit point.

I recently purchased this item for a DIY outdoor french drain installation. Most resources and forums advised on placing a drain sleeve onto such a system. This pipe received a 4 star due to its perforated holes not being cleared after fabrication. It appears that when the holes were drilled the pipes never received a smoothening action for the surface which subsequently tore holes into my drain sleeve. Now in hindsight, I would place the issue onto operator error for not inspecting the work of others.

We ordered and picked up 12 sticks of this pipe for a French drain project. Connections to bends and other pipes is not easy to fit, but if you're doing single lines, then it's fine. Tried returning 2 unused pipes to Home Depot in Springfield, VA and not only did they say that pipes don't come with holes in them and that we must have drilled them ourselves, the sales rep actually kicked the pipe and said we were lying and it was not being returned. After speaking with the manager (and we'll be complaining to Home Depot Corporate), the extra pipe was returned. Good luck if shopping in this area, but the pipe itself is fine other than connections to other pipe fittings. It would be nice if the collared end was removable.

I was having a bunch of pooling water in my backyard which make my basement very humid. I probably laid down about 250 feet of this pvc drainage pipe. I did it all by hand (shovel) I did not use a machine. I wish I had because I hit so many rocks and roots it was ridiculous. Since I was doing this job I also connected all of my gutter down spouts to the drainage pipes. Not only does my yard look so much nicer but all water has now been piped far away from my home. When ever you can do something that gets water away from your foundation DO IT.
