Using old Shopsmith tool for drilling
I used an old 1940’s Shop Smith tool for boring out the holes for the Titan 4x4 post hardware. Worked very well. Note, the installation instructions are wrong for this Home Depot listing. Go to the Titan website. You make first cut with 1 1/4” hole saw down to 1 7/8” depth (as Farr as you can go), then bore it out with a 1 1/8” cutting head then use the 1 1/4” hole saw to go an additional 1 1/2” but do not bore the remaining. No ship auger is used!

    Great product!!
Great product. Used a pair to relocate a 30 year old cedar privacy lattice from a ground to the top of our recently installed deck. I had to remove a couple of planks to add a cross brace for improved mounting. Instructions were very helpful.

These are helpful when you're in a pinch to provide an surface anchoring point but they don't pass building codes in most places. The installation is more difficult than it seems since driving the center post INTO the bottom of the 4x4 is FAR from easy and then drilling and setting the lags makes it hard to get a very PLUMB result. You can adjust it a little but it's very cumbersome. I've used these in the past, but only in very specific situations and where code is not required.

This was a similar product to the ones pre-existing on my deck and I love them. Getting this part to replace with was a significant downgrade. It was made much cheaper than the old ones and bent and chipped more easily. They just don’t make them like they used to.

One broke during installation and my post will forever wobble, just enough to remind me not to buy these things from Home Depot next time.
