Any reason this can't be used in place of a newel post on my indoor railing?

Yes , it's crappy wood, hard to finish, and will give you slivers. Indoor temps and dryness will cause major checking and twisting. Get a glued up interior post or make one out of some good grade KD lumber.

so if there 3.5 x 3.5 inches why are all the caps 4x4?

most post caps that are 4 x 4 are really 3.5 x 3.5 some have a adapter to be used with both, in order to know which is which you have to read the caps product descriptions.

Are these 3.5x3.5 or are they 3.25x3.25 as I measured in the store?

You can try longer screws...or Glue wedges to 2 sides so the post is square.

Can this be painted?

Yup. But you have to use a high-quality primer first. I recommend two coats. Then use good paint (not paint and primer all in one!). There is a big difference between cheap paint and pricy paint. In this case the price is worth it.

can I put a solar cap on this type of post?

I had the same question. The solar ones I bought do not fit over the chamfered top because the screws enter straight. In this case It may be necessary to purchase longer screws and carefully pre-drill horizontal holes to accept them. Even with this approach the 2 sides without screws may be able to "rock" because if they aren't snug enough. Perhaps caulk or glue might address this. Another suggestion I saw was to cut off the chamfered part so the top is dead flat.

Brush on water based polyurethane (non yellowing) For best results, apply, let dry 24 hours, apply 2nd coat, let dry 24 hours, repeat @ least six times, eight would be better.

Is the actual 4 x 4 dimension 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 like other 4x4 lumber?

Posts were well manufactured and found very little knots if any. Very easy to work with, and complimented the deck panels I also purchased. Would definitely purchase again.

Nice design at top, a bit longer than standard 4 foot posts
It is pressure treated without that annoying green or brown color. We purchased these posts for several reasons: they are a bit longer than the standard 4 foot length, thus fitting perfectly into our project needs; The top has a more intricate design than most regular deck posts. We topped it off with a black cap (purchased elsewhere) to give it a finished look and to better match the LIGHTNING RAIL that we also purchased at Home Depot (see separate review on it); the price was right in line with redwood 4 foot posts; and perhaps best of all - the shipping was free and fairly quick. I only give it GOOD quality because there are some splits in the wood in some places. I don't think it will affect it long term, and it was not a deal breaker, but appearance wise, its not as 'pretty' as a sleek looking brand new piece of redwood. But, perhaps, for you, that splitting is the rustic look you want to have? It sealed really well with BEHR Waterproofing Wood Finish.

Very decorative, and yet was the cheapest! I bought without hesitation and found that this was ideal in replacing posts on my deck. The wood even appeared to be of better quality than one of the more expensive posts. I would highly recommend that you consider this post.
