Preventative Maintenance Plan

1. Depending on the location of your outdoor project with regard to direct sun exposure, foliage coverage, etc., it may be sufficient to clean/brighten and recoat every two years. 2. If you decide to wait two or more years to perform your next cleaning/brightening, you may want to use a power washer. Be sure that the cleaner/brightener you use contains a mildewcide.

Choosing The Right Stain Or Paint

When determining the right stain and paint for your deck, consider what color will best enhance the wood's finish.

Paint or Stain Tips

If you desire to paint or stain the treated wood project, it is important that the wood be dry enough to accept a coating. The best way to determine if the wood is sufficiently dry to paint or stain is to sprinkle droplets of water onto the wood. If the water droplets are absorbed, the wood is ready to be painted or stained. If the water droplets bead on the surface of the wood, it is too wet. You should wait a few days before attempting to paint and stain the wood.

Questions & Answers

Do they cut 4x4s at the store for customers?

Asked by: Hk
Hi, I'm happy to answer your question. Yes, Home depot does cut wood. How ever they do not offer precision cuts, so the tolerance is 1/2 inch to any and all cuts for the dimensions requested.

Is it safe to eat fruit or vegetables grown in contact with the treated lumber?

I want to build an arbor to grow grapes
Asked by: PinballHornet
From the University of Missouri: "ACQ (akaline copper quaternary) is an alternative preservative choice for pressure-treated lumber. Unlike CCA, it does not contain arsenic or chromium. It does, however, contain copper, which can leach into the soil from treated lumber. Although copper is an essential element for both plants and animals, excessive amounts can be harmful. A 2007 study of the safety of ACQ published in Human and Ecological Risk Assessment concluded that exposure to copper from contact with ACQ-treated wood is not expected to have adverse effects on the health of adults or children."

How deep does a 4x4 post have to be in the ground. It will be used only as a flag pole,

It would appear that 1 foot would deep enough.
Asked by: Ed
it depends on how long or tall your pole is going to stick out of the ground i would recomend 36-48 inches whoever told you 1 foot is good enough ,you may want to put a sign that says watch out for falling pole /stay clear !!!

Can these poles be used for meter poles for mobile home?

Asked by: Barry
We do not recommend using this timber for a utility pole for a mobile home. We recommend a treated utility pole specified to your specific end use application.

Priced well, but I purchased the only timber in the whole store that wasn't heart grain. Heart grain (bullseye end grain) is sure to twist and warp horribly. Just wish these big box stores would hold the lumber suppliers more accountable for these types of quality control.

The new treatment process used on treated timber effective shortly after Hurricane Katrina is useless. I was in the middle of a project and had to switch with the new stuff the EPA OKed for treated lumber. All of the 20 posts needed for my fence rotted off at the ground and had to be replaced. I used some of old treated lumber on my deck and raised walkways, and I have on had to replace 4 2x6s and 2 posts. You have no choice in the matter. I understand that lumber with the old treatment chemical is still available, but you need a special license to obtain it. I recommend it because you will need this quick rotting lumber.

I bought a couple of these for an outdoor lighting project I'm working on. In the past I've always bought PT lumber from another store. I'm glad I chose HD, though, as most other PT wood I've purchased has carried a sort of greenish brown color. A few things to note: These boards are typically very moist. If you're gonna paint or stain them, you should give them plenty of time to dry completely. Check your boards in-store thoroughly, as the quality of them is very varied. I noticed boards that were bowed, boards that were cracked, boards that were chipped, and boards that had smoothed corners.

I placed the order online for panels and posts. Home Depot had the order ready and loaded on our trailer during pick-up. The hardest part of installation is digging the posts and securing with concrete. It took about a day and half to finish the back and complete the right side. In the pictures, you can see some of the old fence, it was wore and broken. Our backyard now looks great.

Using these for replacement privacy fence posts due to bad judgement on my part for going for the cheap and using landscape timbers instead...not good...posts were heavy due in part to good center cut and the other part of the weight came from water weight...very wet like they had been under water or left somewhere to sit out in the rain unprotected....which they will be totally exposed anyway. I just call them "Heavy Duty"..

I needed the 4"x 4" post for building a bench (legs for the piece). It was difficult to find a fairly decent piece however I had to settle for a banged up wet product. I also purchased a 2"x 8" board that also was less than satisfactory. If this is the standards that Home Depot intends to continue to follow, I will have to source my needs elsewhere..
