Questions & Answers

Do they cut 4x4s at the store for customers?

Asked by: hk
Hi, I'm happy to answer your question. Yes, Home depot does cut wood. How ever they do not offer precision cuts, so the tolerance is 1/2 inch to any and all cuts for the dimensions requested.

Is it safe to eat fruit or vegetables grown in contact with the treated lumber?

I want to build an arbor to grow grapes
Asked by: PinballHornet
From the University of Missouri: "ACQ (akaline copper quaternary) is an alternative preservative choice for pressure-treated lumber. Unlike CCA, it does not contain arsenic or chromium. It does, however, contain copper, which can leach into the soil from treated lumber. Although copper is an essential element for both plants and animals, excessive amounts can be harmful. A 2007 study of the safety of ACQ published in Human and Ecological Risk Assessment concluded that exposure to copper from contact with ACQ-treated wood is not expected to have adverse effects on the health of adults or children."

How deep does a 4x4 post have to be in the ground. It will be used only as a flag pole,

It would appear that 1 foot would deep enough.
Asked by: Ed
it depends on how long or tall your pole is going to stick out of the ground i would recomend 36-48 inches whoever told you 1 foot is good enough ,you may want to put a sign that says watch out for falling pole /stay clear !!!

Can I sand the wood to remove sharp edges for my playset?

Asked by: Nik
Yes, for a playset their usually made from many pieces of wood beams, so I would suggest using a adapter for a drill for sand paper, so your drill does all the work of sanding all of the edges, rather then do them all by hand. Here is the kind of sand paper adapter I am talking about for sake here in home depot http://www.homedepot.com/p/Diablo-5-in-StickFast-Sanding-Disc-Kit-DCD050KITD01G/202830915

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Wishing for something better Over the years I have found the quality of these and other similar 4X4 8ft timbers getting worse. It's rare to not have them warp, split and twist as they dry. Some have twisted as much as 30 degrees from one end to the other. I now try to pick the best out of a stack and still have issues, even after letting them dry in my garage for a couple months first. I can mortise in a gate hinge to account for a mild twist, but more than once, I've had to take a post out and replace it because it continued to warp and twist over the years. I have three in the garage drying now. Two look straight so far after a month, but the third has a 16 degree twist so far. They all looked straight when purchased.

Someone was disappointed in that their timbers had twisted although they were fine when purchased. SYP, or southern yellow pine, is a fibrous wood and some does have a tendency to twist. It can also be more difficult to work with than ponderosa pine. However, most 4 x 4 treated wood timbers are only available in southern yellow pine. PP, or ponderosa pine may also be more expensive. What you don't want is jack pine for treated wood timbers because jack pine has a closed cell structure and does not take treatment well, even after being incised. If you cut the ends you should apply a preservative. Southern yellow pine is a fast growing wood and comes from the south. Ponderosa pine comes from the Black Hills and the best comes from Bend, OR and it is used for millwork (windows and doors). Hope this helps.

Either they were warped, were twisted, had huge knots, or were rounded because of the bark area of the outer part of the tree they were cut from. Finally gave up and spent the extra nickle to purchase much better from their blue competition.

Lengthwise, 2-3 corner edges were sheared off exposing ~ 1/3" of tree ring layer. Pictured post above is idealistic. On the positive side, the post is sturdy, and shows no sign of splitting. I've had it about a month.
