Is this safe for asphalt driveways and concrete stairs? What about new driveways and concrete that have cured for only a few months?
Asked by: MarcWithAC
No. This product contains sodium chloride (rock salt) as indicated in the ingredients which is know to damage driveways and concrete. That's why it's cheap. Get yourself pure calcium chloride to minimize damage.

it this item safe for dogs?

Asked by: Steve
Yes it is. We had a snow storm not long ago and I had this stuff everywhere and took my senior dog who is almost 13 out across it several times a day for her bathroom breaks which are frequent at this age and she had no issues at all and is serious about cleaning her paws and pads when we come back in. She had no adverse reactions from licking her feet or walking on this salt. So I'd say not a issue. If you aren't sure though you can always consult your vet via phone and they can let you know if your specific pet may have a issue to watch for.

Is this Ice Melt safe for roofs?

Is it safe for roofs? I want to do the ubiquitously-recommend trick of filling a stocking with ice melter and tossing it over an ice dam on a roof. Is this safe??
Asked by: Steve
It is just rock salt so I would say so. If your roof is made with standard roofing shingles I would not be concerned as that type of material is used on homes at the coast and it is exposed to salt on a regular basis. If it is made out of some other type of material you may want to consult with the mfg of this product to see.

Asked by: MG
I used a metal scoop, purchased from the outdoor gardening tool section at Home Depot. I poured Ice Melt into a "Homer" bucket to make carrying it easier. I find using a scoop, with a little practice, allows more direct targeting of where you want put the product.

I was dismissed as if I didn’t know what’s i was talking about, when i clearly know the difference between rock salt (which i did not order) and calcium blend, which is what i actually needed. Very disappointed.

We used this product this over the last couple of day to clear ice from roads in the North Georgia mountains. Three bags was all it took to clear a path up a 100-yard stretch of ice covered incline gravel road. Another five bags took are care of a long stretch of deep valley road (little direct sunlight penetration) where cars had been sliding and getting stuck. After about thirty minutes, where sufficient Ice Melt was placed, ice turned to water and began self-draining, or was running down down the road causing additional melt. We applied this product after snow had fallen, where snow had been compacted into ice, but we waited until temperatures were above freezing. Using Ice Melt, I figure the roads we treated were able to be used at least several hours, perhaps a whole day earlier than they would have been had we waited for nature to take its course. Compacted, accumulated ice can linger for days if left untreated, even with temps above freezing. I do hope our local Home Depot continues to stock this product through out these months with potential for winter storms.
