It can be installed without the brushes. if you go to Chewy.com they have the same door with a video and they show you how you can install without the brushes.

Cats love getting scratched so it's an awesome idea. Some people make "teeth" for these catholes. It's pleasant for a cat to get scratched so it's more inclined to use the hole.

But not really big enough to accommodate the cat's litter boxes in a proper, private mannerly way. But the house does have a small basement that was just spot. So I went to the website to check out cat doors for the basement door. And, lo, there was the CATHOLE Pet Door! Perfect. It suits the style of the house, does not have a noisy flap, and is a grooming aid all in one. It lends itself to quick exits when needed, provides an unobtrusive observation post and works great for sneak attacks. And we all get more exercise. We are definitely happy with this product

The dog no longer goes to the bathroom where the kitty does and can't see it. I love it. The brush works great too. I have photos in use but don't know where I may submit them.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy to install as long as you have a jigsaw. My husband cut out the hole and put the door back on in less than 30 minutes. I still need to stain the wooden frame. Looks neat and tidy. Had to leave the brush off so my 20-lb cat could easily fit through the hole.
