Questions & Answers

do you have to leave a gap?

I would like to put them side by side (no gap) can this be done?
Asked by: roadstar
I use a common paint stirring stick for my gap, it's little less then a quarter inch and having a gap allows for alignment adjustments , after time the gap will open up as they dry out, I live in florida and rainy season they swell more then my paint stick gap but not enough so the pickets touch each other, and recede little more in dry what we call dry season :) Depends how dry your area is, if you want to try no gap.... I have tried no gap and stuff swells and twists over the long term for me when it rains for days here and seems to telegraph all that warping down the fence. If I use a gap only one picket will freak out and warp instead of all 5 next to it if I use no gap..... Also we have alot of wind, so some sort of gap is good to tone down the wind load against the fence which makes it want lean over time..... Honestly it is all preference on gap , no gap... How deep your posts are, how much concrete you used for the posts, and what your ground is like... All fine sugar sand ground around here which tends not hold posts straight over time no matter what you seem to use......... So I guess what works best for your area and situation.

Will the store cut this wood to 3.5 inches wide 5 ft. long?

Is there a way to order many of these pickets and have the store cut the wood and when ready, I can pick it up?

Reviews here vs competiior said these were better. I guess it depends on the store! when contractor brought them to the house I didn't initially see any issues, however several began to warp. At first only a few, but within the week they've been up, more are starting to curl up at the bottom. We ran out so bought more from competitor that seem to be straighter and are holding up better. Price was same at both locations. I went to both stores to look at product. The one I bought from had them stacked up on shelving. The HD where I purchased these referred me to a holding bin where the boards were standing up, many warped, thus the reason I went elsewhere. I'd recommend going to look at how they are stored and look at how your order is selected before accepting it!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor quality product The quality of these boards is so bad that I'm surprised that Home Depot even carries these things. We bought 500 for a privacy fence and the poor quality of these boards was a disaster from the start. Many were warped and bent but what was worst of all was even the straight ones began to curl within 2 to 3 days of being attached to the fence frame. The only way to use these is to screw them down at at least 5 different points from the top to the bottom. By the time we added extra bracing and cross boards for attaching these things to try to hold them straight, our cost for this fence went way up and it was clear that we should have shopped for a better fence picket. And don't bother with trying to space them because these boards will shrink a quarter inch in only a couple of weeks in the sun. You'll have more spacing than you'll ever need. In fact, you can see right through our privacy fence in most places. Home Depot's prices are high enough that expect quality when I shop there. These boards are total garbage!

Inconsistent cuts throughout...differences in thickness and the long edge can be curved on one side towards the bottom making it impossible to form a straight linear edge with the next picket to put up. Impossible not to end up with a gap. When you put them in place with no gap expect them to shrink when they dry out and you end up with a gap on both sides no matter what. Either buy a better quality wood and cut your own or look elsewhere. It's like they were milled by someone wearing a blindfold...good luck

Yes, there are bent, cracked, thicker, and thinner ones. They are covered with sawdust and the treating chemical. I've used these in the past and they lasted about 10 years, even while making ground contact. They turn grey as they age. The folks at Home Depot have set up a drive-through area outdoors (due to the high-volume of sales following hurricane Michael) which has made the purchasing process much easier.

They still have a consistent golden brown color. These pickets are not cut perfectly square, so you need to use a level every fifth or sixth picket when you are placing them on the rails to make sure they are straight, which is something you should do with any picket.

There are variations in width from top to bottom of boards. Dog ears are not cut consistently There are variations in thickness of the boards. The boards split easily. The quality of the boards is not high considering the price of the boards. I need 350 more and will look elsewhere for better quality and price.

They are light weight and very easy to install. they are also very resistant (hard to break). Since the pickets are Pressure-treated, their new look lasts for a couple of years before starting to fade. Another plus is that they do not attract termites due to the treatment.
