Questions & Answers

What is the stress strength of the wrecking bar

Asked by: ae954426
We used the "deck wrecker" while dismantling a large plank frame/post frame barn. The handle is long enough to apply sufficient leverage to pull wide board roof sheathing and barn board siding fastened with 8d and 10d common nails. (Rusty and anchored in old growth Douglas Fir. It was also useful in starting to loosen 2x12 plank stall boards fastened with 20d nails, also rusty. Where the "deck wrecker" is most effective is loosening 1x8 shiplap flooring. Although the design allows the tool to easily straddle doubled current dimension 2x floor joists, the jaws are somewhat tight for doubled old dimension materials. The jaws, fingers, seem to be designed for boards under 8". If you are working with wider materials you may need to complete the pull with a bar that you can work further into the space you created between the joist and floor board. You will also learn to develop a "touch" regarding where and pressure necessary to "pop"/loosen the salvage material. Our "deck wrecker" did not sustain any damage to the handle regarding bending. At times my son and I would really put all of our strength and body mass (265 lbs. +) into pulling on the end of the handle. I would purchase this tool again if I lost the current one.

Will it work on screwed down Deck boards

Will it work on screwed down Deck boards
Asked by: charlie
I think a lot would depend on the condition of the screws and how deep there in the wood. You can generate a lot of force with this tool so I would imagine it would work on screws. I would be a little concerned that you might tear out some of the wood, more so than you would if it were nailed.

will it pull up decking that has been screwed down
Asked by: Ralph
Absolutely. Mu son and I ripped off all of my 16 ft by 75 ft deck that had been screwed down in about 5 hours. You can rotate the head of the tool to help you get the best leverage for your situation.

How far apart are the arms/bars from each other? Will it work with pallets that have sandwiched 2x4's?

Asked by: UTDude
It will but not as designed. So be careful as to not crack the wood. Go slow

51 in. Deck Wrecker is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 106.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from must-have for deck destruction or refresh Used this to remove over 1,000 sq ft of decking and joists. The 25-year-old decking was in terrible shape... it was pressure-treated but it wanted to be rotten. With pry pars and hammers and wrecking bars I was able to splinter and tear those boards, maybe one board in 8 or 10 minutes. With the Deck Wrecker I was getting maybe one 16' board every 2-3 minutes. The boards were in one piece so I was able to move them to sensible piles or a dumpster with fewer trips. The advantage of the Deck Wrecker with soggy boards is that it spreads the force over more board. The forks are curved and sit a 4x4 width apart. So better board roll right out, and it digs into weaker boards and uses the leverage of the long, comfortable handle to apply force when it can.

NO HAMMERS OR CROW BARS JUST STAND UP AND REMOVE THE BOARDS. THE HEAD ROTATES 180 DEGREES TO ALLOW USE IN TIGHT PLACES. IF BOARDS ARE INSTALLED WITH SCREWS IT TAKES A LITTLE MORE EFFORT BUT IT DOES THE JOB.

I had some pallets with really tough nails (part nail, part screw, nasty hybrid) which were still difficult and resulted in two broken boards. For those pieces, I had greater success if I loosened a bit with the pry bar and hammer in order to let the deck wrecker do its thing. It worked better on older pallets, and it worked best on the first layer of the pallet. After that, even standing on top of the pallet, the deck wrecker just lifts the pallet with me on top of it! LOL. Back to the pry bar and hammer to loosen the bottom layer, then the deck wrecker can finish up. Would buy again!
