Answer This Question

A:  I just installed one in a customer's garage. He had metal garage doors also, and I had no issues installing the grills in the door. I did cut off the screws that were too long. I might recommend installing some loose filter material over the vent (inside the door) to hold down the dust, but it might be good to add a vent if you do that.

Thermostat does not work
Like all the other reviews stated, the thermostat does not work! You can get it to either always stay on, or to always stay off by messing with it. The thermostat was invented in 1906 and this company cannot seem to get it right even though they charge a premium for the fan. It does rattle a little bit but the noise is not that bad. It also moves a lot of air. It would get 5 stars if the thermostat actually did what it was supposed to. For the price you pay, it should work out of the box!

A friend told me about this GF-14 Garage Fan that he ordered from the internet. I was over at his house and he showed it to me. He closed the door and I was amazed of the air flow that was going through his garage. You could feel it all a crossed it from side to side. I asked him where to purchase one for myself and he directed me to your website. I ordered the fan in installed it. It was quite easy and only took about an hour. The GF14 Fan works just like it was designed for. It brings cooler air into a stuffy and hot garage making it much more bearable to work in on weekends which is when I tinker around out there. I also smoke in the garage and it has helped get the smoke out of it. It is a great product and I am happy to refer any one who has a garage to get one.

This is a nice fan. It came with a Romex Pigtail already installed (about 6' long). The fan is reasonably quiet, too. It is very nice that the grills for the ceiling and the door are included. I would have given it 5 stars, but the quality control missed that the screws holding the button thermostat box screws were stripped and the fan motor mounting nuts were loose. Of course I didn't notice until the fan and ceiling grill were installed and I had to remove the grill to tighten the motor mounting nuts.

          Excitement turns to Disappointment
The thermostat on the unit is substandard. The instructions advise to "test the fan operation by taking a lighter and heat up the thermostat and it will start right up . . . use a ziplock bag with some ice in it to cool down the thermostat. Do this a couple of times to exercise it". While the thermostat is supposed to be adjustable from 90 to 130 degrees, even after exercising the thermostat several times, the unit did not turn on with out a lighter to it then did not shut off at 76 degrees as measured in the attic space. To access the thermostat you need to unscrew the face plate to access the dial. When registering the product, no confirmation is sent. When contacting their customer service by phone, multiple calls did not result in obtaining a working thermostat, rather you will likely get a speech about the 15 years he's been doing this and doesn't have issues, although it was suggested that a timer be installed to turn the unit on and off. The thermostat has an 8 degree variance (and yet still does not turn off at 76 degrees), yet the representative reluctantly stated he would send a new thermostat, however a by pass unit was sent in error and he failed to correct the matter after being advised of the issue. The motor may be "energy efficient" however in comparing with roof fans, it is under powered with a thermostat that does not work, especially at this price! Hopefully this unit works for your needs however I would recommend carefully considering alternatives.

It is made to cool an attic, though a lot of buyers (myself included) bought to cool off the garage. It is wider that the normal "16 inch on center" rafters in most homes so you'll have to build a small box to mount it; or get venting to vent it out a roof vent (cutting a vent in your roof) - not what I was expecting but after an hour or building, cutting, it works good. It has a thermostat on the outside that works well if you want to let it keep the attic cool on it's own. I had to remove that and hard wire it to a switch on the wall to cool the garage...just things to think about. The unit has a huge draw of air and does a great job cooling down the garage (you need to open the garage door or it creates a vacuum). It is not super quiet but it has a lot of power so was not expecting quiet. If you've never done a project in your home to requires some work, I would not suggest for the common DYI person. I gave it 4 stars only due to not enough data how to measurements etc so I had no clue what I was getting into, as most of us would rather know upfront...but it works great!
