Questions & Answers

how do I determine the thickness of the roller cover I need?

Asked by: Jimmy
The rougher the surface, the thicker the nap The smoother surface, the thinner the nap Most drywall applications use a 3/8in nap but you can go from 1/4in to 1/2in. Some may even use a 3/4in but only with flat paints. Going to this high of a nap will leave more stipple (roller marks) on your walls.

what tpe of roller should I use to stain a wood deck?

Asked by: Bill
I used behr deck over from home depot and used a very thick roller since the paint is very very thick. If its a thin stain then smooth to semi smooth would be fine.

To prep them: 1. Saturate it with cold water then wring and shake out the water leaving it damp 2. Take a stiff plastic/vinyl scrub brush and firmly brush the roller left to right all around, then right to left all around. Any loose fibers should be on the brush and can easily be picked out. 3. Put the roller cover on the roller and attach a paint pole, then spin the roller on a wall briskly a few times to extract any remaining excess water The roller cover is now mildly damp and ready to use. It *MAY* leave a loose fiber or two on the wall when first used (hence 4*) which should be visible and can be picked off the wall easily, then re-roll that spot immediately. I use this process faithfully and have no problems. I also sand the walls first using a pole sander then wipe the wall with a damp sponge, and apply 2 coats - 1 full coverage coat then 1 thin coat after the first coat dries, using the same roller cover the same day. Use the second coat to cover any minor missed spots from the first coat. Be sure to coat the roller cover with paint while it sits in the tray briefly between coats. With the additional pole sanding which does not take very long, my walls are smooth as glass with no fuzz or roller marks. Just remember to paint in 1 direction (ie left to right), keep moving to maintain a wet edge, and DON'T roll over any previous areas once you've moved forward. Roll from top to bottom on the wall, forget all that "W" stroking etc.

I returned this after the first roll of paint onto the wall left 10 or more clumps of fiber from the roller mixed in with the paint. When I went back to the paint tray, I found a half dozen additional clumps of fibers and scrapped the tray of paint rather than worry about picking fibers out for the rest of the job.

They also shed a lot of little fibers. I never should have went cheap on the rollers after I bought such nice paint. Buy the best rollers you can if you want your job to look nice. Not these.

The price is good. Having multiple rollers keeps me from having to wash them after use. I just throw the used one away and start a new one.
