Is this the type of humidifier that can be filled with tap water or does it require distilled water?

How many watts does this use?

The Essick reply team didn't read or understand their own Use and Care manual which has a link on this Home Depot page. The unit runs on 40 WATTS (NOT 120 watts as Essick stated), 120 VOLTS, which is 1/3 AMP (40/120) to operate - with such minimal power draw it can run on any household receptacle. The manual is the only place this information is provided - there is no ETL or UL label visible on the unit itself (I doubled check mine). Hope this helps.

Maybe the placement where you have the humidifier? Sometimes putting in front of a air return will make them run longer and not accurately. Or a bad humidity sensor. Mine does not do this.

Depends on how much noise you can tolerate when you sleep. This unit is rather quiet on speed 2, but may still keep you awake if you require total silence. I prefer this type of unit to the cool mist humidifiers that while quiet, they spray water into the air and leave a fine white power on everything in the room. They also have to be cleaned almost daily as they can harbor bacteria. This unit is much easier to maintain. But again, it depends on how quiet you need it to be. Why is there a Prop 65 warning for cancer and reproductive harm on this product?

Hello, Louise! Many of our humidifiers and wick/filter frames are made of one of the most widely used plastics in small appliances: Polystyrene. The process to create polystyrene uses the chemical compound benzene. Benzene is known to the state of California to cause cancer, birth defects, or reproductive harm. The state of California requires that consumers be made aware of the presence of this chemical, as well as more than 900 others, under Proposition 65. If you have any other questions, please visit the Prop 65 site. Link here: >https://www.p65warnings.ca.gov/

Have you changed out the filters? If the filters are plugged it won't work as well.

I purchased this model primarily because of the dimensions so it would fit into certain places around the house. It works well, and is quiet on the lowest of the 4 fan settings. I'll probably order another for upstairs. We have an 1880's Colonial with radiator heat.

Great little humidifier
I used this to replace a tower style humidifier made by the same company. That unit has 2 side tanks which had to be removed to fill and were akward to replace. This can be refilled easily by just pouring water trough the top grate on either side of the fan assembly. The lowest speed is quiet enough and can keep the humidity at the setting I prefer.

Works great and is simple to set up.
This little unit really puts out the humidity! I was very impressed with how well it worked and it doesn't take up very much room either. I've used Essick products in the past and they last a long time. I gave my brother my old one (a larger unit) several years ago after I used it for 5-6 years and it's still working great! Before I purchased this unit, I went back and forth on whether I wanted to get a unit that was filter free, as that's the only drawback to owning a unit like this, but after reading the reviews of the filterless units and the time spent cleaning and filling them and the reliability issues, I finally decided to stick with what I know works. The little bit of money you spend for filters far outweighs the time spent cleaning the other units in my humble opinion. As they say, time is money, and who's not pressed for time these days? You can't beat this little unit for the money.

So I love the humidifier BUT I just had to purchase my second one 2 months. Not sure of the first one is an indication of the overall quality or if it was just the bad egg so to speak. The downside to this product is that I haven't figured out how to clean the grill/fan. Dust and some pet hair was starting to build up on it. You can't take the grill off to wipe the fan or clean the grill and since all of the wiring is under the fan, you can't exactly spray it down.

The fan is loud even on the lowest setting. On the highest setting it's so loud I can't even believe they made that setting. It also can't keep my apartment humidified even though it's well under the advertised/suggested square feet. I've been using it for a couple weeks, and I'll be returning this one.

Hello, Jason! Our humidifiers are made to put a lot of moisture into the air. We would probably get a lot of complaints if they didn’t. With that powerful output comes a little more noise; most of our customers liken it to a box fan. If you find it bothersome, we recommend running your unit at the highest speed during the day, then reducing the fan speed while you are sleeping. If you’d like us to run through some troubleshooting with you, and make sure the sound you’re hearing isn’t a defect, please give us a call at 800-547-3888, 7:00 AM – 5:30 PM CST, Monday through Friday. Thanks. -Melissa, AIRCARE

Nice simple humidifier, paper filters are very fragile though and the glue broke on them almost immediately. They still stand and do their job they are just a bit loose, it is a wear item though. Blue LCD display is excessively bright. The machine does a great job keeping humidity levels up in my small apartment. Would buy again.
