The American Gas Log gas fireplace insert is a great way to use your fireplace more often if you haven't done so with regular wood burning. We converted our home 6 years ago with a different (more expensive set) than this and all the components look to be of similar or higher quality. This is going into another wood burning fireplace since the gas line is pulled through the firebox. (Please get a quote from a plumber who has done these before. The cost depends on how far and how much work is required to get a line to the fire box). The actual unit we have is a pilot version. My other fireplace has an electronic start so there is no pilot. I find the each season as I fire it up for the first time I have to check everything including batteries (replacing a set of 4 large D batteries) to get it started. With the pilot you just hit the remote and you are working. I would setup the damper to have the clamp to allow the possibility of gas being backed up instead of closing the damper and opening each time you light the fire. the issue with that is there could be a slight draft in the room from the small safety opening on the damper. There appears to be a manual shutoff for the pilot so you won't need to have it on during the warmer part of the year. (See pic). I like that this unit has a hi-lo remote so allow for more or less heat. Keep in mind these will take the chill off of a room but won't throw heat like a wood fire. But on a damp rainy day when the draft backs up on a wood fire, you'll be glad to have the gas fire roaring. Plus with the cost of natural gas being low a cord of wood gets to be expensive in comparison. I'm very happy with this product.

One of the things that attracted us to our house 20-plus years ago was the big masonry fireplace in the family room, and we've burned a lot of wood in there since. Love the heat, love the glow.... but over time we began to hate the soot, the ashes and the smoke. So it's been sitting idle for a few years now. Enter the American Gas Log Salisbury vented gas log set. While I'm still waiting for the conversion to be completed so I can do a full and complete review, a couple of things drew us to this log set. It's simple - it'll burn in a masonry fireplace without modification (other than running a gas line), it has a thermocouple shut-off pilot light, and a remote lighter, and once you put it in place, just use it when desired and forget it the rest of the time.
