well I did answer this question before , but here I go yes you can install outside by the well but off course if you can build a small roof for it will be better also it will last longer that's how I have my system under roof .

I do recommend setting up the timer for regeneration to 3 am so you won't be using the water at that time ,if you do probably is going to be a smelly water coming into the house.

It really depends on what kind of smell you are experiencing? A water softener in general only softens the water, and are not meant to remove any other contaminants in the water. We have systems or filters that bundle with a water softener that can get rid of certain types of contaminants and or smells in the water. However, it would be hard to offer you a system without knowing what exactly is creating that smell.
