If you are going to install this directly over the popcorn ceiling without scraping it then be sure to use nails that are long enough to get through the thickness of the board and popcorn while still biting deeply enough into the overhanging joists/studs. Alternatively, you could install furring strips over the popcorn ceiling and then nail your boards directly into those. Make sure you determine which way your joists/studs are running, as that will determine which direction you can ran the boards. They need to run perpendicular to your studs.
