A:  Probably 1/4 inch, but to get rid of the slugs you can make a barrier around your strawberry patch by pouring a line of plain old table salt. They can't cross the salt, they will melt. Works on snails too.

    A:  That’s what I use it for. Put it under two metal raised beds for keeping out any critters underground. Two years later, it appears to still be working. No indication we had moles, but did it just in case because I saw some in the neighborhood.

      A:  The 1/2" will work against moles. If you're adjoining two pieces of the hardware cloth, be sure to overlap and tie together with wire so they can't push through.

        A:  No, squirrels can not chew through hardware cloth. The wire is too thick and too close together for them to even try. We have had this around our chick coop for years and nothing has succeeded at even beginning to get through it. We pulled it taught and hammered in fence staples about every 6-8 inches. We have squirrels, raccoons, foxes, hawks and coyotes and nothing has gotten through! Installed correctly, whatever you put behind this should be secure.

            Oxidizing and brittle 4 months after install
            I've used a lot of 1/2 hardware cloth on my chicken coops and greenhouse, and the 2 and 3 foot wide stuff is not always economical. So when I bought this large spool, I was looking forward to some savings. Unfortunately, this stuff does not look like it's going to last. It's already oxidizing and brittle within 4 months of installation. I'm concerned that it won't keep out the predators, which is why I pay considerably more for hardware cloth than chicken wire. Disappointed.

              Smelled funny and weird spots in places
              If it wasn't still packaged up properly in it's plastic, I would have thought the one I got was used. It smells like a barnyard, and there are spots that seem like corrosion or dung or something...? I'd already cut into it before I noticed it, otherwise it'd be going back. Not terribly pleased.
