Q:For outward swinging gates, how much of a gap do you need to leave in the front face boards to permit it ample space to open? I wouldn't want a large gap people can see through.

Q:I have found amazingly little on how to open this gate from the OUTSIDE. I see the latch and understand it- but there appears to be no exterior handle to open the gate. How have others solved this? Thanks.

Defective hinge, no customer service
2 weeks after install, hinge broke where its two pieces are welded. The welding was so poor it basically never penetrated metal. Company has no customer service number, and instead wants you to file complaint by mailing in letter. Outer latch doesn't catch pin, so door swings open often. There is no inner latch for opening door; all they provide you with is a thin cable that you tie around the latch on the outside. I'm ready to pay more at smaller stores, HD is low cost but unreliable.

Got the job done, but poor quality & engineering
Instructions are not very detailed.
Once I was ready to attach the truss cable kit I found the part you turn was stripped or poorly threaded, and could not tighten. [See pic for part reference].
Home Depot gave me a hardware bag from another kit, they said to take the whole bag. Thank goodness, because the the weld on a hinge broke on first test but luckily I was able to replace the hinge from the replacement bag.
Overall, it will do for now, but I would not likely buy again.

Yes, an outward swinging board-on-board gate is possible with this kit
Our HOA requires a board-on-board with cap rail gate, outward swinging, pressure treated pine. These pictures show my solution. I used stainless screws, and a different latch. Most important: The hinge pins must line up vertically for smooth operation - my existing posts are not plumb. Used waterproof black tape to cover the unused frame holes to prevent internal rust. Used Rustoleum paint to cover a bit of existing rust on the welds.

Product is Under Engineered
The truss kit used for compensating gate sag is too lightweight for the job on a 72 inch gate. When attempting to level the gate with the turnbuckle, the S-hook and the S end of the turnbuckle stretched to the point that it tore out of the attachement hole in the square metal tubing. I replaced the hardware with heavier duty components. Adjust-A-Gate customer service was no help and would not compensate me for my out of pocket expense for replacement hardware.

Even the picture proves it doesn't work
After getting frustrated with telescopic tubes that are a quarter inch smaller than each other all the way around, I remembered the guy in the picture standing on the gate. I closely looked at the picture and you can see where they tried to edit out what is obviously a bolt or support reinforcing the gate. It's so flimsy that it barely supports the wood required to build a gate

Garbage design
First, the gap between my posts is 41 inches. A full 5 inches wider than the minimum size this kit should work for. The gate does not fit, even when it’s adjusted as narrow as possible.
Second, the hinge design is garbage. The hinges are not hard-fastened to the gate. You tighten a bolt across a clevis that wraps around the frame, essentially clamping the hinge onto the frame.
As a mechanical engineer, I would never design or trust a hinge this way.
