Q:How does this pipe perform in northern climates with freezing and thawing? What is the risk of cracking? Better than PVC?
by|Apr 5, 2024
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Hi, Morti - That shouldn't be a problem. Here's a statement from ADS' Triple Wall spec sheet (available on their website): "Triple Wall pipe, made from HDPE, provides strength and allows enough flexibility to withstand freeze/thaw conditions and continuous subzero conditions without cracking or shattering." Better than PVC? Generally PE (polyethylene) can withstand freezing temperatures to about -40 degrees F whereas PVC is about 0 degrees F according to the Plastic Pipe Institute.

Q:Will stagnant water leak through the bell end connector? Or is an hdpe adhesive needed to ensure it is water tight?

    Answer This Question

A:  Hi, Kyle - Stagnant water should not leak through the bell fitting (it's usually a nice, tight fit), but it's not a bad idea either (if it concerns you) to use an appropriate adhesive.

      Answer This Question

A:  Hi, Billy - Not sure which reviews were providing conflicting results but it's best to go with the answers provided by the ADS or VPC expert. In this case, yes, triple wall solid drain pipe can be used for sewer applications.

Q:It would be great if someone, especially ADS, could recommend how these pipes can attach to NDS catch basins. Since NDS is the industry standard, and ADS is trying to get up to use these pipes instead of corrugated or PVC, ADS should tell us how.

A:  Hi again, Wstt - NDS catch/drain basins can accept either a 4" or 3" pipe. Please check out their site to see a close-up view but, for the most part, the pipe slides into a receiver of that same size and just snaps in. Here's a link to NDS on how to install their drain basin. https://video.search.yahoo.com/yhs/search;_ylt=AwrjZiWqb9dlH2cNJTcPxQt.;_ylu=Y29sbwNncTEEcG9zAzEEdnRpZAMEc2VjA3BpdnM-?p=Catch+basin+installation.&type=asbw_8063_CHW_US_tid20129&param1=OB7Q9827oUBzZbKaUxQ%2Ffg8OABsV84KG8bIPNZoGtzNIC6Rog1ldhPAwqYTRfwd0&param2=9dUI1n2R0BLDxNuWfiP4aSFOTltNdSPoIx38%2BUf%2FiXrvPdoGmStdlfwLFZYDvqkAJrWWk4yNReCLnBD%2FqPsDZd7olTZcV8HMx1G%2Fk786sE2Tis1g8dJd8zxVWs%2BbKztBnq1TfqUiqPYK9pXifXmJFyorDuCsYXJE71Y6G5tfejD%2B5tyTkSAJ%2F994UKwW08PJBLIHGEYfg9hi7QJpbEO%2FkP3nR7f6lqVpjTwhrCvov068y2vWKpx9n69Fn3A%2Bt%2BdWHkAdqCjV8aD%2FkcVJGYPjYg%3D%3D&param3=NwVEMR%2FzKcG52XsVBYEh2zk2Yklq85vdfspZPoqz2M1qypHRDDTed5vIiOf0QJloJAws3N4BZ2OFCPQG%2BRw4WpTnzaTq2VmIHxERXcUW3rVQCtxOG%2BsIEOUp0%2Ff9ylXTGucyJu3wBF4BE4auNWzgxOr3ZQLaMDxoR3CJSOGZPL%2FgUOOWxjD%2Fx3z6HrZgBfDFGeATX1Rah%2BpAzvozFAk1h%2FrrOZJjAWjMbecrnpthGxOmV8Cj%2BcRpV1R2Ml%2FBP1wAEt96b7aW6Ek9GKFDyVTiH6RCeyvdER2GSNDl788zoS5uRxwsMxtF0tPPmj%2B91C%2FPrYRayvaSC%2FLBDXRSp7jught4xeDO5y%2FDzjgh%2BOGTrOGD6y%2Bl5bIW22PtUHtlktAnpP4nA973Kx3U124ckan9t4PhUyVISszYZ%2BDekEDg12KlG3lbXVRp0bLkiD4NK%2BWd4JDthHHgngcQlZpkICfp8Q0N27ubFxhuThTiQyVEJ51dew%2F8rpSjgtICfR%2BQAKoU&param4=cdpFFFPMCjPE3wmzKMhjV6Bmqu%2Fx6PilN4GxqbXulV0%3D&hsimp=yhs-syn&hspart=iba&ei=UTF-8&fr=yhs-iba-syn#id=4&vid=5610cd53d15ca740dac28e92f9c17fe6&action=view. I selected the ADS triple wall pipe because I wanted some flexibility vs the stiff green sewer pipe or the black corrugated flexible pipe because of the possible dips and particle build up. It did exactly as I had figured . I did add 3 inspection T pipes for the eventual grate or emitter at the ground level when the soil settles. I did make sure to make the fluted /female opening in the "opposite direction" of flow of water to ensure there would be minimal leakage if any and using a 4 foot long level to ensure that I had a continual slope during the installation. I did rent the NEW HD power trencher "ride on" advised by the rental department That was the wisest decision . I had completed the trench excavation in 2 1/2 hours 120 feet long and 20 +/- inches deep including the removal of many large rocks .Probably one of the best choices and ease of installation I had done. Very happy with these choices. After note : After installation I noticed during a heavy rain some stones drained out pretty much ensuring that the white pipe was the wiser choice.

These triple wall drainage pipes are perfect for my application. I needed to divert and bury the gutter spouts away from the house foundations and into my garden area. The previous owners had a long gutter pipe just laying on top of the lawn. I felt that was ugly and wanted to bury the drainage pipes. These were perfect for the job. Nothing earth shattering here - just a hand dug trench about a foot, foot and a half below ground to divert water. The four inch pipe is sturdy enough and was easy to cut with most any saws - I used my handy DeWalt pull saw. Using a simple 4 inch elbow from the downspout to the drain pipes was a no-brainer. The pipes connect to each other with a built in collar - no glue or sealant required. I made sure that the trench and pipes had a good pitch away so water drains fully away from the house and does not collect in the pipe. I've used these pipes in the past for the same project around two other sides of my house and they're perfect for the job. They are sturdy, will not collapse, and have smooth inside walls where leaves and dirt will not be trapped in crevices - versus those other corrugated pipes. I do not recommend nor will I ever use corrugated piping for any underground drainage project. These triple ply drainage pipes are superior to corrugated piping in all aspects. A bonus about these pipes is that you can use them for workshop dust collection systems as well - and they are perfect for that project that I'll be doing soon!

I like this product. Strong, rigid, lightweight, and easy to cut. And quite reasonably priced. We are having our driveway redone in pavers, so I decided to run a drain pipe from the downspout to the bottom of the driveway to avoid rain flushing over the pavers. After the pavers are installed, I will cut the pipe down to a couple inches above and cut out the downspout pattern into a cap to fit over the pipe.

The product worked well for my drainage application. It was a little thinner than I expected so I'm hoping that it will hold up to top pressure once buried underground. I could stand on it with no deflection so it looks like it will work well. Assembled very easily and was easy to work with.

            Hydroponic garden.
I purchased these pipes for my hydroponic garden and they worked very very well. PVC PVC glue does not work very well on these pipes. I ended up using flexible couplings to seal the pipes on the ends with a cap and in the center.

              Vertical Garden
I installed a vertical garden over the Memorial Holiday weekend on our side yard (facing east), I drilled 2" holes on both sides of the pipe with 6" spacing and I cut the pipes to 92"and filled with Miraclegrow. I plan on planning more strawberries, lettuce, peas, basil etc, with the 10 pipes we have 140 plant positions (see attached pics), this product is very easy to work with and rigid enough to stand up to my needs, (we tested one pipe for 3 weeks and we have red, yellow and green pepper growing with strawberries at the bottom.

Bought a couple of these to lead downspout rainwater away from our homes foundations. They are easy to glue together and to other PVC end fittings. These are good products for handling high water volume.
