I want to add a timer function to the high/low yellow control wires. But I don’t know what the yellow wires do. Do they close a line voltage? Can I close the dual speed(yellow wires) with a Leviton decora+ timer switch?

Can this be installed on a vaulted ceiling? My bathroom has a tall ceiling with walls ranging from 9 feet to 13 feet. I planned on mounting this above the shower (about 12 feet above the floor) but didn't know if the angle would affect the unit's performance. Is an angled installation validated?

Answer This Question

These fans can be installed into a vaulted ceiling given you have enough clearance. It is also important that the fan be facing in a way that allows the backdraft damper to open and close properly.

Does this fan run continuously? Or can it run strictly off the humidity sensor? That is, leave the wall switch on and the fan turns on above a certain humidity level and turns off below a certain humidity level?

    Answer This Question

The fan runs at low speed continuously and when high humidity is detected it switches to high speed.

This fan is designed to run continuous and can be set up at time of installation for the continuous operation. In addition the humidity sensor will kick the fan on at the humidity level that it has been set at. Please see link to instruction manual. We also have 2 videos on our website, one on installation and one on setting the humidistat. www.airkinglimited.com http://www.airkinglimited.com/instructions/EVDIO.pdf

Can this be installed vertically (through a wall)?

        Answer This Question

It can be installed in a ceiling vertically, it can be installed in a wall but it would have to be horizontally, and you would have to make sure you have a thick enough wall to hold the housing

        By|Apr 2, 2025

          (2)

It only vents out the side. There is no option to vent out the top, which would be needed if you want to mount it in a wall.

          Answer This Question

The Air King BFQL series is 450 lumens while most of the other series are 800 lumens - these are all for units that include the bulbs. Non ENERGY STAR units can utilize brighter bulbs - usually 60 watt or more.

This is a very large exhaust fan with a maximum output of 150 CFM. The title says it's a single speed but it actually has two speeds. It's a little confusing but there are switches inside the fan that you set at the time of installation(but can be changed later) that set the low speed at between 30-60 CFM or 70-120 CFM and the high setting at between 80-150 CFM. Once that is set it you wire it to a double wall switch. One switch controls the light and the other switches the fan from low to high speed. The fan is designed for continuous operation so there is no on/off switch which is disappointing. Only low or high speed. I have figured out a way to wire it with a third switch so that I can turn it off completely. It is as simple to install as any other exhaust fan other than it is heavier than most and does require a 6" duct. The grill looks nice and is quite large at 16 x 17 inches. The light is an 8 watt LED with a GU24 base so if it ever needs replaced I'll probably have to special order it.

Though I list the need for a larger vent ductwork, this really is a plus. You just can't replace your existing fan without cutting a larger ceiling opening. And you must replace small 4-inch ducting with larger capacity 6-inch. That was the bad news. But for a quiet fan ( I mean quiet) and to remove a large volume of air (humidity and oders) plus an adjustable speed and humidity sensing unit, install this. I saved this replacement for the cool winter months and it is worth it. I wish I had done this when my three (3) teenage children were still home. The electric box is easily accessed from the side or back. The motor mount unscrews and pivots out for mountiung the metal can (box). A nice trim plate will help hide the drywall. Large plastic vent clips in easily to the trim plate.

Air King exhaust fan. So here we have a variable speed with humidity sensor energy efficient unit. First of all this is a very large unit so be sure you have the space to install it. Second it’s a 6” ducting be sure this is the sizing of ducting you are installing or have existing. It’s not recommended to go from 6 to 4 inches as you will increase the noise level and not be able to move the air volume. Over all a nice unit , very quite on its lower setting but it’s level increases through its settings. You are able to set the production levels internally. The install is straight forward for new or existing installation , but again be sure you have the space 10”mimimim ceiling and ducting sizing. Basic wiring on off is easy and the internal humidity switch will increase the motor speed as required , more advanced switches are possible with instructions included but no switch. Build quality is better then average, grill is plain, note the fan squirrel cage is plastic. In my opinion this is a higher skilled DYI project no big deal for a tradesman. Great option for ventilation needs.

This fan has more adjustments than I considered possible. There are five switches that you can adjust after it is installed. It has a humidistat to let you set the “automatic on”, based on humidity. Then it has three timers for the low/medium/high speeds. And there is a switch for the default minimum CFM air speed, basically high or low. It is a well thought out, well built, well sealed, full featured unit. On the install, it has a trim ring that hides the ceiling cut. The fan metal box is about 13” square so a fairly tight fit in a 16” center stud bay (about 14.5” stud to stud). It is larger than the average contractor fan, i.e., the box is bigger, the duct is 6”, it is fairly “tall”, etc. Plan the install carefully. For example, I couldn’t put it as far towards the eave in the attic as I would like, due to the roof slope. My one minor complaint is that the mounting arms’ screw/nail tabs don’t stick out far enough to allow using a drill, hammer or ratchet to tight screws/nails. The mounting rail protrudes and conflicts. You remove the motor to install it so it is fairly light until the motor is installed. You can remove the control units (2), also, to end up with an empty box. I wired it with 12-4 w/ ground NM/Romex wiring, in case I wanted to install a heater/night light/light/fan or some other combo in the future. This unit only needs 12-2 w/ ground. I wire-nutted the spare wires in the fan wiring box. The fan also has a “boost” speed that I think converts it from the standard 130 CFM to 113 CFM with more static pressure (SP), per the label. The fan is very quiet in normal operation and the automation works nicely. It is also very nice looking.

This is a very high quality fan at an affordable price. Installation was pretty easy except for the wiring. To access the wires from the attic there is a very tiny triangular access port. There is no way to get your fingers in there to install a Romex connector. To access the wiring from below you need to remove the blower motor which only requires the removal of 2 nuts and washers, you can then remove the one screw holding the wireless cover in place. The only other issue you may run into with this fan is that the housing is quite tall. It extends about 3 inches past the 2x6 joists. I put a 2x4 frame around it so it wouldn't get hit with anything I store in my attic. The fan is super quiet and moves A LOT of air even on the lowest setting. There are 3 speed adjustment knobs and a high/low switch. I have mine set to the lowest speed when the humidity is low and the highest when the humidity is high. Even at the highest speed the fan is whisper quiet. The fan has a 5 year warranty but the build quality suggests that this fan will last for many years more than that. The fan has a neat clean look when installed.

Ultra Loud - Do Not Buy
I am about 5 years into owning this fan and I have only known it to be a problem. The low setting is nice and quiet and couldn’t hold a piece of paper up but the moment there is moisture and the fast setting kicks in, I can’t tell if my ceiling is going to fall in or not. It’s loud and obnoxious but the only setting to keep moisture low in the bathroom. Looking at replacing it already which we all know is not easy.
            by
Very quite! Makes me feel more hard of hearing than I actually am. I needed to see it would hold up a small piece of paper towel to know it was working.

does the job. Installed as retro fit to replace existing fan. Just wish there was a rubber/foam gasket or something on the cover or on the lip of the housing to damping down vibration noises.
