While you should not experience too much of a negative reaction from your plants, plants grown with too much nitrogen may attract aphids.

But, I couldn't get past the VERY strong fish odor, which made it difficult to mix the product and water the plants (hence the rating of four instead of five stars). Even though the product worked good, I would not by the product again due to the strong odor and my sensitive stomach.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from wintergreen sure does smell a lot like dead fish I guess "deodorized" is a relative thing. Great price, great product, and seemingly always available locally. I rotate this + kelp + miracle gro with about 4 other sets of concoctions, then use a saponin drench on the fifth week. Most of my small indoor tropical trees get 1/2 strength feeding, and the more voracious ones appreciate the extra nitrogen with this main course of the month. I've had surprising results after adding each new concoction, but the response to this + kelp was pretty amazing, and when outside I gave them an extra foliar spray which sent them to the moon. A full feeding: 1 capfull/gal + 1/2 tsp kelp + .1/2 tsp 10-10-10 Miracle Gro. Anything in a less than 16"d x 13"h planter gets 1/2 of all feedings, soil amendment feedings included. Less seems to be much much more in this case. Instructions for indoor foliar feeding with this: move. Abandon everything you own for about a year; seems to take that long for the wintergreen to come through.

Fish emulsion still remains one of the best natural fertilizers one can buy. It is a high hit of nitrogen that I mostly use as a spray. I also have poured bucks of it on a soil bed to help enrich it before planting. It stinks (pretty big time) but it is a good food for plants, all kinds, and doesn't burn them. At least, I've never known that to happen. I don't use it excessively, but have sprayed it on my hanging plants on the porch, poured bucketfuls into my growbox (along with other fertilizer) to enrich the soil and sprayed it on shrubs around the house. I know when I have used it because my plants respond. I give a light spray, not a drench. I would not over-use it because it ahs a load of nitrogen. The downside is it does stink pretty bad, and it is very thick and needs a lot of shaking so you can pour it out. I use a capful to one gallon of water. I would recommend it, not as the only fertilizer, but as a good once in a while for existing plants and to get a grow box/bed area ready for planting. It is still pretty affordable compared to others, as a bottle will last a long time and doesn't go bad (maybe just stink a little more).

I observed a landscaper using Alaska Fish Fertilizer 5-1-1 for the install of my flower garden. I pulled the bottle out of the trash bag for my information. Visited HD online, and yes, my HD carries this in the garden section. Brought it home, mixed per instructions for my 7 foot Mexican Ash tree which hasn't grown much since I planted it 3 years ago. As the old saying goes, "wish I knew then what I know now". Someone recommended that I make three 24" deep holes around the tree so as to pour the mixture deep down into the root system. In went the fertilizer, followed with watering for about 3 weeks, and wow. Two feet of growth. I have no old pictures for reference. It wasn't growing. But in the attached photo, its top used to be in line with the distant tree in the background. In all its 3 years, I have never seen this many budding leaves and bright colors on it. And, they are still coming. Since I got this fish fertilizer, I have applied it to my other plants. What a surprise. It works! In American history, the first pilgrims were taught by the Natives to place fish parts into the ground before planting the seed. Well, well, well. Glad I got this, and I will be telling anyone what I used. And, thanks Home Depot for having this on the shelves.

I talked to the company and was told I could fertilize more frequently to give things a boost, so I did. I'm amazed at the results: after 4 applications growth rate and leaf color improved dramatically. Liquid application is direct, controllable, and convenient. Can't recommend this product enough.

It fertilizes & helps the overall health of the soil by adding good stuff back into it. It is not an instant fix, but more of a long term plan. Will definitely buy again.
