Questions & Answers

How often do these plants need to be watered?

Asked by: Helenbea
Cacti should never be watered until the soil is near to-bone-dry. They handle under-watering well, especially in pots indoors. I have a very large cacti collection, and I water all of them once a month. Like another person mentioned, never water them from the top. Sit them in a shallow dish of water (I use one of those plastic trays one buys for under houseplants: Fill this tray as high as you can.) Let them stand in the water for approx. 15 minutes, then lift them out. Never let them sit in water when not watering, or they will rot. Enjoy!

SHOULD THE CACTI/SUCULENTS BE TAKEN IN DOOIR DURING THE COLD RAINY SEASON?

Asked by: JEANIE
It depends a lot on the plant, but generally if it's going to be 40's or below then they should be getting less water. So it's probably a good idea to bring them in during cooler months. Just remember to still provide plenty of light.

One of them was from Altman Plants, and it was the better of the two. I replanted it, as I always do with new succulents, and I found that the soil was actually not bad. It was decent cactus soil, unlike other hardware store succulents which have been in regular potting soil. The roots were healthy and there were no signs of rot or pests. Unfortunately, the HD I went to had a massive mealybug problem, so I've still got the plant quarantined, but so far so good. The plant had lost a few leaves and had one that was a little shriveled, likely due to underwatering. I'm honestly happy it was underwatering instead of overwatering, since under is an easy fix, but over can kill the plant. They were kept in a sunny part of the greenhouse and were not etiolated, so am pleased about that. The floret is tight and happy. A couple of the lost leaves were sprouting pups, so I'm happy to have a couple little pups to grow. Overall, the plant is in pretty good shape, but due to having lost a few leaves under HD's care I'm giving it 4 stars. HD cared for the plants much better than other hardware stores in my area, but there's definitely room for improvement. Fix the mealybug problem, please!
