Questions & Answers

leaving it down indefinitely

Has anyone left this on their carpet for a long period of time? My dog has been eliminating on area of my carpet and while I use pads inevitably it runs off the pad or the pad gets shifted and he goes right on the carpet. I was thinking about putting this down and then laying pads on top so if he misses the pad, the protective film will catch it and the carpet is saved. If I leave the film down for a few months will it ruin the carpet? Any experience? Thanks!
Asked by: mct
We had this film down for 3 months over cut pile carpet. When we pulled it up we could tell (by touch) that it left a slight residue of adhesive on the carpet's surface. We can't say that the residue resulted in a noticeable attraction in dust or dirt. But then again spraying Scotchguard protection before the film was applied may have helped. In any event, the tackiness did not last and our contractor grade off-white carpet still looks and feels great after some time of unprotected use.

is it slippery to walk on

is it slippery to walk on
Asked by: jimbo
It is difficult to detect if the film is slippery because the carpet beneath the film still absorbs one's weight and the film provides no resistance greater than the uncarpeted area. Would i have safety concerns (someone slipping or falling) as a result of using this film? No. A great protect when the service people require multiple trips outside and inside to get the job done. Even had service people thank me because it saved them time and worry because they did not have to change shoes or slip on booties at the door.

how do apply this "self stick" film? how do you make it stick to the carpet?!

how do apply this "self stick" film? how do you make it stick to the carpet?!
Asked by: Glenn
Peel back the thinner self-stick adhesive protective film that may be at the start of the roll. If one exposes about an inch or two from the edge then one can precisely press down a leading or starting edge for the film. Once the leading edge is pressed into place then the roll can be held like a roll of paper towels and pulled and pressed down in lengths that are manageable. I used a roller sold for this film and discovered it took some skill and strength to quickly lay down 4 to 8 feet of length at a given stroke. Applying the film by hand is at best a two person job. Using a roller helps to make it a one person job.

Can I use this to paint spray my room. Can I put this up to the baseboards and use the paint sprayer

Asked by: Chad
While your use is a novel application i would avoid the use this product as a substitute for painter's tape. The tackiness of the adhesive backing coupled with the flexibility of this film will make it difficult to precisely apply to a surface plus it may not enable a sharp edge at the edge of the film.

3 ft. x 200 ft. 3-mil Temporary Self-adhesive Carpet Protection Film is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 26.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Did the Job Used to cover white carpet in new home when moving in. Applied night before the move and removed three days later. Worked fine. Stayed in place, did not move, hand trucks did not go through. All good. No problem after removal. But - removal, for me, was an on-the-job training exercise. The material sticks and stays in place. - maybe a little too well. When removing be very careful around seams and near the edge of the carpet at the moldings. Fibers could be pulled at the seams and carpet could be pulled/separated at the molding (ask me how I know) On-the-job training taught me not to try to pull it up as it when down. Instead carefully cut through from the bottom to remove pieces about 5 ft long at a time. Pull from the center of the room toward the tack strips while standing on the carpet near the piece being removed ( to preserve the stretch of your new carpet). At carpet mouldings remove the film parallel to the molding slowly and carefully. Identify the seams and remove film very very slowly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from excellent product I am protecting a carpeted runner on a staircase with the film. I have done a complete gut on an upstairs bathroom. Plumbers , carpenters , and electricians beating on it and it is still good. The safety of nothing loose on the staircase is a huge plus. I love this product. The home owner is thrilled with my consideration. Sometimes it's the little things like this that the home owner will not look elswhere for another contractor.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Positive note: Once you have this product down, it is... Positive note: Once you have this product down, it is really tough which is great. We had heavy ladders, and all types of tools set down on it with no tears. It's been down on our carpets for 3 weeks now and will stay down until all our remodel work is done -- likely two more months. Negative note: There are no good instructions to help you understand how hard and awkward it is to peel this shield material off the roll and control that peeling off/laying down process. It's a two-person job and even then the roll will roll back on itself, sticking to itself. It is easy to get extremely frustrated and waste a lot of material. Tip: We came up with a method that helped us manage the roll-off of material. We put a broom stick through the center of the roll. One person holds the broom handle ends (allowing the roll to spin freely) while the other tugs/pulls at the material to start the peel off. When you have 12" or so of material peeled off, then the person with the roll places the roll at the point where you want to start the coverage, the other person sticks the first 12" down, and the person with the roll now pulls the broom stick in jerks of maybe 2 feet at a time to release material and stick that material to the floor. Using the broom also provides a way to set the unused roll aside without laying it down (where it sticks to the floor). You just set the broom vertically against a wall which keeps the roll from sticking to anything. Tip #2: To reduce waste from the material rolling back on itself and sticking to itself (very difficult to unstick this), always cut the peeled off material to within one or two inches from the roll.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good protection for carpet (especially stairs). So far so good, it has been a week. My contractor (bathroom remodel) recommended it to protect carpet. No slipping and a lot of dirt is being kept off the rug. I used plastic runners on flat surfaces, but I think this may have been better. It is a real advantage to use the 3 FT. wide- covers the whole step and would be wide enough to walk on. He put it down so and he did say there was a learning curve, but he seemed to do it pretty quickly. Since he used it, I put level advanced.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product - works as advertised This plastic sheeting material, while somewhat pricey, is very durable and works just as advertised. It also goes down easily with two people and a razor blade or sheet rock knife. Some customers with old houses may want to measure their hallways to make certain that a 3ft sheet will fit! We used this for a large outdoor party - it allowed everyone to access the bathrooms in the house, walking on light colored carpeting, without any soiling or damage to the carpet. It comes up easily when you're finished with it, too. Great product and works well! We'll be buying it the next time we entertain large.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great Cannot put on hardwood floors. Put on frieze carpet and it really clung. If ur catpet is not secure, have someone walk infront of you on the catpet as you pull it up. Didnt feel the least bit slck on the stairs. No holes. Can't glide furiture over it. Needs to be carried.
