too flimsy in hard soil
This planter is definitely not cut out for heavy duty applications or in hard soil. The ground in my front yard is unfortunately very tough with stones and clay (i amin the process of improving this but it takes time). While the push-release cocept is geberally a good thing it unfortunately make the planter rather flimsy. I have had the handles bend countless times and the grip opened up and released the spring. I have finally given up on this planter now and will look for a more sturdy option.

Wow ! Ames Bulb Planter makes a perfectly shaped hole for planting bulbs at the exact depth required. I am using the planter tool for other flowers, too, because it's so much easier than a shovel for planting flowers in small spaces. To get this to penetrate down into hard soil, I just turned the planter from left to right four or five times. It cut through the soil and debris quickly and easily. I love it.

Gardening is my hobby! The hand tool bulb planter poly push is a great concept however my hands aren’t strong enough to use my thumb to allow the base to expand. Personally a gardening claw or hand shovel is easier. I attempted to use this innovative tool in potting soil and found it to be easiest. Living in Florida our soil consists of mostly sand. Once the tool was placed in a upright position I used the handle and slightly went back and forth pushing so the hand tool would dig deeper. Again this was a little too much work for my hands. Finally I attempted to try an area where other plants are placed in a garden area and it was impossible to get the tool in the grounds due to possibly small roots or not so soft soil, I was hoping the design on the bottom with jagged metal edges would have made this possible I rated this on my personal experience . Those whom have stronger hands may love the hand too, it is a great concept just not for me personality

    Difficult to hold closed.
This bulb planter is expandable and retractable ..... open it up, push it into the dirt, let it retract, and out comes the dirt .... a perfect hole for bulbs, annuals, or other small plants. It has a serrated edge for cutting into the dirt, a dark plastic moveable handle and seems to be made out of a heavy-duty metal. There are also depth markers on the sides of the metal.

    Perfect for planting small plants
My wife and I really enjoyed using this to plant our small plants. It fits nicely in your hand. The easy to press side button opens and closes the scoop for easy dirt removal. This tool takes the guess work out of planting. The hole it creates is the perfect size and dept. I can see this being a great tool for the avid Gardner. I recommend this product for novice wanting to plant their own plants or gardens.

    OK for occasional use
My got this as a replacement for one that disappeared somewhere in our yard. If you are only going to plant a few bulbs and don't mind working on your knees this planter should do the trick. Consider purchasing one of the long handled models if you have lots of planting to do. A nice feature of this planter is the spring-loaded handle that releases the dirt (Picture 1) . Unfortunately the tab on our planter tended to catch on one side causing it to stick open (Picture 2). Problem solved; I fixed this problem by bending the tab slightly more open with pliers.
