Can I add a 2nd closer and or wind chain?

our current storm door has been damaged and damaged the door jamb because if being blown open in the wind. I noticed this only has 1 closer but would like to add a 2nd and it possibly a wind chain.
Asked by: mdp006
We are sorry about what happened to the door jamb but thank you for posting your question. Your door has a retractable screen rolled up inside the top door panel, and putting additional closer at the top would damage the screen. We do not recommend installing wind chain on our storm doors. Our experience, which is backed up by tests conducted by our Engineering department, is that a wind chain does not significantly increase the ability of the door to resist wind damage. In fact, our tests indicate that, under certain conditions, the presence of a wind chain may actually increase the likelihood of damage to the door and door jamb. Because of this, we strongly discourage the installation of wind chains on our doors and do not offer one. If you wish, you can certainly install a third-party wind chain on your door. However, if you do this, please be aware of the fact that any damage due to the presence of a wind chain would be excluded from coverage under the terms of the door's Warranty. - Enno

How is the upper glass cleaned behind the screen on a retractable storm door?

How is the upper glass cleaned behind the screen on a retractable storm door?
Asked by: rosebud
I purchased this for my sister. As I remember, the screen does not interfere with cleaning. The screen is on a roller so when you pull the upper window down the screen automatically follows. The screen must be on a roller mechanism that is hidden in the upper part of the door. It's actually very cool. So when the screen is in use, Both glass sections are side by side on the lower part of the door.

36 in. x 80 in. 3000 Series White Left-Hand Self-Storing Easy Install Aluminum Storm Door is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 1481.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very easy installation I have put up many storm doors. However, the most recent was probably 10 years ago. My how the technology and process has changed. This storm door went up so quickly, fit and finish is perfect, and having the door completely assembled right out of the box was amazing. There’s, no more Z Channels to cut, no lock hole templates to align, virtually impossible to do it incorrectly. The 3000 series is slightly more expensive than the 2500 series, but it is well worth the money in both installation time, ease, and Home Depot has many colors to choose from in the store without special order. The most difficult part of the job was putting in the plastic strips that cover the screws. There is no way you can pop them in with your thumb. Don’t get frustrated just line them up in the channel and tap them with a rubber mallet until they click. I would have broken my thumb off if I kept trying before i thought of the rubber mallet. If I ever need another door, I’m getting this one again.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Great looking door, terrible materials This review is after having used the door for about a year and a half. The install was easy and the door looks great, unfortunately the materials it is made with are absolute garbage. We have now had the tracks and screen replaced three times due to warping as well as the cross member that divides the two glass panes. These are all made from cheap plastic that cannot stand up to the heat, unfortunately the door is also impossible to touch during the hottest summer days as it traps heat and the provided handle gets scorching hot. After several interactions with Andersen customer support, we have been advised they don't offer a more resilient aluminum or other type of material, what's worst is for the first year the parts are still under warranty but you are expected to pay for shipping of their garbage replacement parts. $400 for terrible materials is not worth the hassle.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid Quality Storm Door I had to replace my 13-YO EMCO storm door because the full-length hinge started to break at the top. No lost love as that door was terrible. I took a chance on a higher quality Anderson 3000 series and went with the split glass and retractable screen (cause I now have a dog). I really liked how the door comes in specific right or left swing instead of the more generic units requiring more drilling. The instructions say it can be installed in 45 minutes but it ended up taking me a little less then 90 minutes. It can be easily installed by one person. The instructions are excellent and the only trouble I had was snapping on the screw cover trim pieces (what you'd expect would be a 1 minute step took me 10). The door feels like a much higher quality than what I replaced. Hopefully, I get 10+ years of trouble-free use out of it. BTW, the salesman at my local HD was exceptional and explained the key differences between the different Anderson Series doors. I went with his recommendation and am glad I did.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Door Great looking door! Well constructed and is a solidly made door. Will take longer than 45 mins to install. Installed two doors. A right hand and a left hand. Took about 1.5 hrs for first door. Second door went in just under an hour. Instructions were quite easy to follow. Need to follow instructions carefully. Just got them in so time will tell how they hold up. I believe with the well made construction that these doors will last for years. One is installed on a door on a porch so will not see much weather. Other is on the side of the house and will see intense morning sun and will be exposed to weather daily. Also bought the handles and latches to go with the door. Very simple to install. I had shallow door causing and was concerned about interference with my door handles. As it turned out the storm door handles sit higher than my exterior door handles so there was not interference and I was able to install handles on the same side as my exterior doors. Color is Sandstone.

Drill a couple more holes and install a couple more screws to where the door close mechanism attaches to the frame. The two screws it comes with can pull out if the door gets away from you in the wind. I also replaced the original screws with larger ones.

I am an avid DIYer, so I am fairly experienced at doing projects around my old(built in 1939) house. I watched several installation videos and read the the installation manual several times online before buying the Anderson 3000 storm door from Home Depot. Yes, the Anderson 3000 was easy to install. It took me about an hour to install the door, that is, after I spent four hours cleaning, preparing, and painting the opening, once I removed the old storm door. I spent about one more hour installing the handle, sealing around the door, adjusting the closing speed and cleaning up. I have to admit,I really like this door! I especially like the self storing screen and the door handle. The lock on the storm door uses a standard key, which worked perfectly with the Kwikset Smartkey lock on my entry door. With Smartkey, I only need one key to open the storm door, and the entry door. I am very happy with the results of this project.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from After completing 90% of the installation, I ran into a problem where the top window was stuck in ... After completing 90% of the installation, I ran into a problem where the top window was stuck in place and couldn't be lowered. I called Anderson, and they sent me this, verbatim, in an email: "There is a potential issue in 3000SS doors. The vent window can travel too far upward during installation and get stuck. Once the window handle has been installed (instruction step 5e) there is no longer risk of this occurring. This issue cannot occur on doors already installed. The issue started with a small product change to the 3000SS on 9/27. A label was added to doors on 10/5 instructing installers not to remove the tape securing the vent window to the frame until step 5e has been completed. This will ensure the window handle is installed before the window is moved and will eliminate risk of the issue occurring during install. The product will be revised to eliminate the risk of over traveling the window on or before 11/26. WHY WINDOWS GET STUCK An unintended side effect of the product change was that the window can overtravel and the spring-loaded pins that retain the vent window can travel above the plastic jamb liner and get stuck above the jamb liner. This will not allow the window to be lowered." I did not remove the tape on the window until I reached the proper step in the installation process, but unfortunately the window was probably already stuck before I even took it out of the box. The "tape solution" certainly didn't work. Anderson emailed me instructions on how to fix the problem, but the instructions did not work, and unfortunately I now had a defective door installed. Anderson's only solution was to have me remove the door, and they would send a new door for me to reinstall. This is terrible customer service on Anderson's part - selling what they know to be a potentially defective door. Home Depot is working to help me with a solution, but it will probably be 4 or more weeks before anything can get done. I'll never trust Anderson windows and doors again.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Rubbish Design Within a year after installation, the vinyl tracks started to deform. I made sure the screen was fully extended in the summer to let the hot air circulate between the storm door and entry door. It doesn't do any good because the track is made of vinyl. It will deform from direct sunlight over time. The deformation of the tracks cause the screen to get caught in the tracks hence rips it apart on the sides. The company suggests that by extending the screen, hot air will not be trapped between both doors and hence the vinyl will not deform. They need to go back to science class and learn more about vinyl exposure to constant sunlight. I've owned this door for about 4 years now and already on the 3rd set of roller screens and tracks. Their suggestion doesn't solve the problem at all, only pushes out the inevitable. Last I checked, mother nature still prevails. After this 3rd set of tracks deforms, it's time to put the entire screen door in the trash. I'm better off buying a different door from another company.
