This set includes two sizes of retractable, snap-off blade utility knives. The larger knife is suitable for the uses typically performed with a conventional utility knife (cutting boxes, opening packaging, cutting cord, etc.) while the smaller size would be more suitable for detail work where more agility is needed along with a smaller physical size to get into tight spaces (perhaps trimming stencils). Both knives permit one to extend the active cutting segment to one of three extensions, limiting the amount of exposed blade to the minimum needed. Both knives, as well, have an integrally molded “loop” that one could insert a lanyard through to tether the knives, however only the smaller knife provides a pocket clip. The convenience of the multi-segment snap-off blades is that one always (until using the last segment) has a sharp edge at the ready should the need arise. To that end, both knives incorporate a slot in the removable end cap for use in snapping off the used segment. There is no built-in receptacle to hold used segments prior to disposing of them (a lack not unique to these particular knives). The blade extension slider on the smaller knife allowed movement of the blade whenever the slider was depressed, regardless of thumb position on the slider. Additionally, the “ratchet” mechanism permitted extension of the blade (for example if it was stuck in a work piece and one attempted to withdraw it) without the slider being depressed at all. Additionally, once you have gotten to the last half of the smaller blade, when gripping the knife, one’s thumb will almost naturally land on the slider resulting in possible blade movement. If held like a pencil, while doing detail work, inadvertent contact with the slider would less likely. In summary, although both knives do not have a positive acting latch for the blade, when extended, the larger of the two knives will suffice for most utility knife functions. The smaller knife would be best reserved for more delicate detail work where it will be handled with finesse, rather than gripped with brute force.
