How does this mailbox work? Does your mail carrier need a key to leave packages?

How does this mailbox work? Does your mail carrier need a key to leave packages?
Asked by: lazymbabe
The specs say this Oasis #5100 model takes small to medium size parcels like mailed prescriptions or boxes of checks. It won't take large packages because of how the security baffle works Similar to a real mail drop at the post office. Postal carrier will have to take it to your door or leave a notification to pick it up at your post office. The carrier does not have a key to the locked storage area of the mailbox.

Can somebody steal mail from these?

Asked by: andy
The mail sometimes doesn't fall inside. If someone were very careful they might be able to open it enough to use a stick to get it.

Does it come with a post?

Asked by: Kimberly
This price is just for the box. I think I paid an additional $64 for the post. Take my advice and order the Architectural Mailboxes' #5525 4" x 4" metal 53" Post with a welded top mounting plate and pre-drilled to make mounting a breeze with 4 supplied bolts, washers and nuts made for this #5100 Oasis mail box . The most important and time-consuming part is digging your post hole at the right distance from the curb, making sure it set plumb, and that it is the right height so that the incoming mail door handle on your 20" high box is positioned to the desired height for the mail carrier's vehicle. I think the top of the post mounting plate should be 35-36" above the road surface. (which puts the top of installed 20" high mailbox at about 56" above the road surface when mounted. This makes the mail drop handle height 52.5 to 53.5" above street. You probably think you could figure out a cheaper way, but it won't look as good and probably won't be as quick as you thought it would be. Trust me, the post is designed to match the mailbox style with matching paint color.

Stainless or galvanized?

The product description says "The stainless-steel body features a powder-coated finish for corrosion resistance." But the product details say galvanized steel. Which is it?

Customer Reviews

Oasis Post-Mount or Column-Mount Locking Mailbox in Black with Outgoing Mail Indicator is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 94.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fixed a problem I have a home that is rural, and we order a lot from ebay. My mailman is very grumpy about bringing packages to the door, and he would often try to cram items into our normal sized mailbox. He often damaged items that I'd purchased. When we would complain, he made it clear that he doesn't feel he has to come to the door and that if it doesn't fit in the mailbox, he may not deliver it at all. So, we purchased this oversized mailbox and mounted it by the curb. Now, he can fit a lot more stuff in there without damaging it. There is still some stuff that he has to bring up the driveway, but it is no longer a daily event, and he is 50% less surley. The mailbox itself is very solidly built. It seems to be a sturdier construction than what I've seen at apartment complex mailboxes or other industrial settings. It locks securely.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from We are happy with our new mailbox. However, we... We are happy with our new mailbox. However, we give it only 4 stars because when the mail drops down, it doesn't lay flat in the bottom compartment. It stays vertical at the back of the compartment. This is because the upper flap extends so far back that there just isn't space for the mail to lay flat. The mail is secure and not reachable through the flap (because it extends so far back) even though the mail is standing vertical. Our last mailbox, by a different manufacturer, was the same way. We wish someone would design a better way to make full use of the large bottom compartment. It does hold a fair amount of mail - letters, catalogs, and a small package or soft-sided package.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very secure! This is a fantastic mailbox. It is very solid and works just like a USPS curbside mailbox. The hopper is large enough to hold medium-sized packages. The mailbox is well constructed. I expect that it will last indefinitely. When placed in the hopper, mail falls into a large "storage" area that is accessible only by using a key. Literally the only way that mail could be stolen is if a thief steals the entire mailbox. Also, there is enough room in the storage area for about two weeks of mail (assuming that you get what I would consider an average amount of mail every day).

I found it worked better to tilt the mailbox back when installing so that the mail would fall easily into the receptacle. The only problem I have is the lock freezing and sticking, even after application of heat and lubricant. I will have to replace the lock because water gets in, and I had to take the lock out to get my mail. Aside from that, I am very satisfied.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Could be better designed This is supposed to be a security type mail box, however it has an issue. The postal carrier pulls down the handle and puts the mail in. When the door is closed, the mail slides down into the secured box below. The problem is, magazines usually don't get into the secured area, thus, if any important mail was put in on top of the magazines, it may not get into the box. The back of the slide is too long which prevents the magazines from falling down. I am considering cutting the back of the slide to make more room for the magazines. Also, the instructions say to mount it level, however I have found that when it rains, some rain stays on the top and when the mail is delivered, some water can fall onto the mail. Not a lot, but some. I put a couple washers under the front bolts to raise the front just a little so the water will run to the back. Overall construction is good.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from best i could find! i researched many locking mailboxes & found this one to have the best & most secure design. installing it was difficult for me becuz i'm not tool savvy, but i got some simple help & the install is pretty easy for anyone who owns a power tool. i initially bought the "big brother" to the oasis jr, and it was humongous, so i had to get this smaller version. the only critique i have is that it does not come with any hardware, like bolts, washers, etc. i had to procure those separately. also - it doesn't say you need to buy the accompanying base plate but you really should, or else you have to fashion a base plate out of wood or something else. otherwise, i'm now a happy (& secure) camper!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great locking mailbox I used the matching metal post that you can buy for this mailbox and installed it myself. I mixed up a little cement as the instructions recommended for installing the post into the ground. The result is a very sturdy mailbox that is very high quality. It is very solid and the doors have a high quality feel when opening and closing. The doors also have rubber seals on them to keep the moisture out. My mail is kept clean, dry, and secure. It is the best mailbox that I have ever owned.

We live ten miles out of town and on a dead end street and have never had a problem until recently. We did the research and selected this mail box because it was large enough to get packages as well as good reviews on security. We get a fair amount of rain and it also handles that well. We got extra keyes made so that we can put them on all of our key rings. The mail box is 1/8 of a mile down from the house. We got some lettering made for the address and installed the mail box on the stand. That part took just a few minutes. We are delighted with the stand.
