Insulating your pipes is an inexpensive project, especially when you consider the cost of a burst water pipe. Re-insulating your pipes is a simple process. The challenge is working within any space constraints you might have. You can cut off the old insulation and replace it with Armaflex coiled insulation: APC05812R. This product will fit 1/2" Copper and PEX piping. You will need to use a non-serrated knife to slit the insulation down the longitudinal so you can wrap it around the pipe. You can use Armacell 520 Adhesive or Armaflex Insulating Tape to seal the longitudinal joint that you slit. You can also insulate over your existing insulation, you will just need to measure the OD of your current system to determine the ID of insulation you will need. You could always look into hiring a local handyman or insulation contractor to contract this out to.
Absolutely NOT. Your sprinkler system does not FLOW thru your attic (unless of course it is actively discharging either due to a fire event or other type of discharge). The system is completely stagnant after you fill it, until you drain it again or it goes off. No pipes are kept from freezing by simply using any type of insulation. Insulation only keeps the item encased within it at the temperature it starts out as, for as long as it can (or the R-Value). Insulation does eventually let the item warm or cool to the surrounding environment temperature, with a higher R-Value it just takes longer. There needs to be a source of heat being applied to the system's water, that will be held in by the insulation. Insulation does not add heat the product, it only keeps the temp inside the insulation blanket from being affected by the outside air temps for as long as the R-Value allows. Think two 8 lb bags of ice on a 90 degree summer day. Put one of those bags in an Igloo cooler, the other on the ground next to the cooler. In less than 30 min the bag on the ground outside the Igloo will be melted completely, the bag inside the cooler (inside the insulation blanket) will be there for hours and hours, BUT IT EVENTUALLY WILL MELT as well. The R-Value of the cooler kept the temp inside as long as it could, but eventually the surrounding temps won the battle. The cooler didn't actively lower the temp with refrigeration, the insulation provided a buffer between the outside temps and the inside temps. This is the same thought process as pipes in your attic. The case with flowing water pipes is different, and the insulation on these lines is more likely to prevent a freeze-up, as the water is typically moving, and introducing a higher temp water on a regular basis to those portions of the overall runs. BTW - I'm a sprinkler contractor and we make millions every year fixing frozen/broken pipes in attics where the above answer was given to folks. Just don't do it. The only way to keep pipe in your attic from freezing is to "tent" the batt insulation entirely over top of all of the piping, keeping the complete sprinkler system below the insulation blanket on the "warm" side. You can use this product to help mitigate it, or prolong it, but it 100% WILL NOT PREVENT it from freezing. Best of luck.
