Q:Do I need to apply primer to a fence before using this product?

      Answer This Question

A:  Hi Will, thank you for your question. A primer is not needed for most woods. However, redwood, cedar, cypress, and other "bleeding" woods can cause discoloration of white and pastel colors, so we recommend priming them with our Multi-Surface Primer (No. 436). Have a great day! -Lina

The stain color I bought was a custom mix gray, not black! I’m a retired painting contractor. I really like the way this product is user friendly! I used it for the first time recently and like the dried look on my fence! Easy cleanup!

          Beautiful Color
I'm not sure it the ashy uneven look is from application or the product. I love the color, it's just not as polished looking as I'd like.

I used this to paint a wooden bench on my front porch. It is a true black and looks wonderful. The paint was easy to use and went on nice and smooth. I used two coats, one was done in the morning and the second done in the early afternoon. After dinner it was slightly tacky but the bench was able to be moved to my covered porch. Cleanup was easy with water.

So Far, So Good. I applied it to a 700 ft long 4 rail wood fence that had been unprotected for about 18 months. I used a good quality airless sprayer with a 317 tip and it went on beautifully. I ended up using 30 gallons to complete the job. Fence looks great. Just completed it last week so I can't comment on longevity or durability. Time will tell.

Great for Log Cabin Homes- stands the test of time
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have been using this product for 25 years now (have painted my NC log cabin twice now) and the paint has lasted about 12 years each time. It waterproofs, prevents mildew, and provides total UV protection. When I first bought the log kit back in 1998, it referred me to use Flood UV stain. That only lasted 2 years and the logs leaked badly by absorption. Took a chance with this Behr product and it worked perfectly and reliably. We also decided to use it on our Cypress fence in our Florida home- getting the same successful results and it withstands the UV and humidity just fine. Fence is now 20 years old and holding up fine. Just a reminder- this product is for sides of homes or fences. Do not use deck stains.

I can understand your disappointment, since the stain didn't perform as expected. Customer satisfaction is very important, and our Customer Care team is on standby and ready to help.
