Q:Can I use this to paint metal bleachers? If I can, what paint would you recommend to use over this primer? I would prefer a satin finish
by|Mar 21, 2023

Answer This Question

A:  Hi Keri, thank you for your question. The primer can be used on metal; however, we do not have any products to recommend on bleachers, as bleachers will get a lot of traffic, including people stepping and standing on them. We do not have floor coatings that can be used on metal. I suggest checking with your local store for a recommendation on a suitable product to use. Have a great day! -Giovanna

Q:Can I apply this onto metal roof to the follow up with 100 percent silicone on a roof?

    Answer This Question

A:  Hi Bryan, thanks for the question. Typically our products have a hard time adhering to silicone-based products. I'd recommend checking with the manufacturer to see if the silicone-based can be top-coated with a water-based primer. Have a great day! -Ronald

Q:If I painting metal cabinets do I need to said it first before using this? Can I just use any enamel paint or it had to be direct to metal?

        Answer This Question

A:  Hi Katrina, thanks for the question. For smooth surfaces such as metal cabinets, you would need to scuff sand them first to help with the adhesion of the primer. You can then use the paint of your choice to paint over the Direct to Metal Primer. Good luck painting your metal cabinets. -Ronald

Its the third time and last I gave the chance to Behr product. Bought it to paint some metal thing. It says works for galvanized metal and can be painted oil or water base paint. All what I needed. So did my prep, send, clean, prime, 6 hours to dry. Oil paint spray and paint just shrink. I have never had this kind of experience with other brands during my 15 years career. Time and money wasted bad but to waste part what I painted its just devastating. SW and BM all the way now…

This is not typical, and I can understand your disappointment. Customer satisfaction is important to us, and we appreciate your feedback. Prior to painting metal entry door we sanded the entire door after having removed hardware(hinges, door knob). The entire sanded metal surface was cleaned with acetone. Three coats of metal primer were applied to entire door (front, back & edges). Allowing a full day for primer to dry, the next day we applied Behr Oil Based Enamel paint. We applied four coats of paint on each side, and on edges, of door. There being no hurry we waited about 12 hours between each coat of paint. The end result was excellent. It was worth all the work. Keep in mind we removed door from hinges and had a dedicated area to perform all work. Area was well lighted and well vented. We did need to use an old entry door to take the place of the entry door we were working on. If you do not have access to another door you may consider boarding up entry way with plywood and deck screws to secure plywood. Screws were kept close to door jamb so holes left by screws would be concealed/covered up by doors casing. Holes were filled with wall putty. Once final coat of paint was dry we installed new door lock hardware, Ring Doorbell and replaced hinges. Finished by installing and painting door casing. Great Results! Well worth it!

This 1 GAL. WHITE INTERIOR/EXTERIOR METAL PRIMER, IN WHITES/FLAT worked out just great! We needed it to cover up/repaint some aluminum outdoor tables we had that were looking a bit outdated and worn out... this product did the job!! Easy to apply, covered very well in 1 application, dries quickly and gave our tables the primer base coat that we needed so we could cover them up! Nice smooth coating

I used this primer on a pair of 64 year old tractor fenders. These fenders are heavy gauge iron and had a lot of rust and old paint on them. After several hours of grinding and sanding, I managed to get most of the old paint and rust removed. Behr states that the primer can be used on "sound rusty metal." These fenders had a lot of sound, rusty metal and even a few places that were unsound. After a couple of coats of the Behr metal primer, these spots were no longer discernible. The primer is thin enough to readily flow into cracks and crevices. I chose to use a paint brush and had several runny spots as a result. This was not unexpected and I intend to sand these spots down before applying the final coat. Also, my drying times were not as fast as the label listed. I'm sure this is due to Florida's extremely high summertime humidity.

I was very interested in trying a waterborne metal primer. So I gathered my instruments (See photograph 1.) to assess the prevailing conditions. And I selected two difficult substrates (See photographs 2 and 3. ) to evaluate the product. The specimens were degreased, clean and dry. Air temperature was 74F. Both surface temperatures were 74F. (The specimens are inside.) Relative humidity was 74.5%. That makes the calculated dewpoint about 65.5 degrees F. So, based on typical painting specifications, I was greater than 5 degrees above the dewpoint. However, I did observe that the product instructions do not address this margin: possibly because it is a waterborne product. When stirring the primer, I noticed it has a very appreciable solids content (which easily is kept in suspension) - and it has no objectionable volatiles or odor. The primer was easy to apply, including working around cut edges and penetrations, over rivets and screws, cutting in adjoining insulation and conduits, and coating around / beneath crisscrossing cables. One orientation that did pose greater difficulty was painting a portion of my test panels overhead. Likely this was due to my election to brush (as opposed to roll) because of small spaces between the obstructions. I think the results of my first try were good. All the features of my brass specimen were covered. (See photograph 4.) The galvanized steel uniformly was coated. (See photograph 5.) The primer dried in the timeframe anticipated. It appeared to have good adhesion. I did not perform a pull test - but just tried to abrade it with moderate pressure on a paint stirrer and a 5-in-1 tool. My only concern was the pattern of weak spots (very thin coverage). Those were not holidays or signs of contamination. I think they resulted from my use of a cheap disposable polyester brush instead of the recommended nylon / polyester blend. I'm reasonably sure the latter would promote better loading of the brush / coverage (greater film thickness) and mitigate some of the difficulty I had with overhead work. Nevertheless, the primer's flow and self-leveling characteristics are good. While I'm not particularly concerned about bonding the top coat, I'll trying try cross brushing a second primer coat to further evaluate its coverage and workability. Sure enough! After a bit of tack time, coverage vastly was improved by a few strokes brushing perpendicular to the first application - even with the same amateur brush. (See photograph 6.)

This Behr Metal Primer, White/Flat is outstanding. It adheres to the surfaces of rusty cast iron and covers and beautifies whatever metal project you are completing. I will be painting with this paint too our front entranceway railing. I restored a broken cast iron yard bench. Pictures attached with this posting. And I simply am amazed and proud of the quality of the painted finish this White Interior/Exterior Metal Primer by Behr provided. I recommend and of course trust and use many of the Behr paint products. Superb quality and a brand I trust. If you need a good quality Metal primer paint reach for Behr. Water based dries in about an hour. I painted in direct sunlight this project and it dried even in less time than that. It also cleans up well with just soap and water.

I was skeptical about this, because past metal primers from Home Depot were cheap and the finish didn't last long with a proper top coat.. Good Metal Primers are made NOT TO ABSORB water.. so rust won't form onto the metal railings after a while. However, this primer doe initially look good and went on very smoothly. I'm not sure if it's as good as an industrial Sherwin Williams metal primer paint, but so far so good. Maybe it works just as good now the water based, but in theory it sounds odd!

I had purchased an old aluminum birdbath from a garage sale, that had seen better days. I had tried to use spray paint to refinish it, but spray paint just didn’t do the trick. When I saw this product was available in the Seeds Program, I chose it. Well, I must say it worked perfectly, I did have to use three coats to cover it because the birdbath was very pitted. It looks brand new now. Now all I need is for the birds to use it. This product washes up with soap and water and is easy to apply. Thank You Home Depot

I am reviewing 1 gallon white interior/exterior metal primer. The primer is flat and white in color. This paint is in a can and I will apply with a small paint brush This primer is for metal and can be used indoors or outdoors. I am using it to prime an outside steal railing with some gates. These railings were installed more than 10 years ago. I sanded over the current metal first to get any lose paint or particles before I primed. This primer is white, the current color of the railings is black and I will stay with that black color with a spray paint. Clean up was easy, just soap and water with and water rinse after cleaning with soap and water. Yes this is water based primer. I applied the top coat an hour after I finished painting the primer on the metal. The final coat sprayed on extremely easy and looks great. I have included pictures showing the paint and the railings with primer on and after finished. This paint can also be applied with a sprayer. Very happy with this primer and it painted on very easily.
