Hi LA, Thank you for your question. You can apply the second coat of our DeckOver after 4 hours or more of dry time. I hope this was helpful, and best of luck. -Edith
I waited 24 hours before applying a second coat just to ensure it was completely dry.
I let it dry overnight. . .or longer. More important is to insure wood is dry before first coat. If drops of water don't soak in, and stay beaded up, it's not dry.
There are always a few factors--This product needs to be painted in the shade and when it is not too hot for best results. Be sure deck is completely dry from pressure washing, etc..Usually a lot of these products can be painted over within 4 hrs. It should be in the product specifications on the web site. To be safe, wait 24 hours. But this product has a lot of complaints from customers so you really need to follow the manufacturers directions. But look at the reviews of the product. In my own case I had to completely strip it off a deck because it all began to peel up in sheets on one of my jobs, but on another, after 2 years, it is holding up well.
Depends on the weather, normal conditions 1-2 hours, longer on humid days. It will crack and peel by the next day,
It will look dry within about 30 minutes but depending on the temperature, allow at least 2 hours in between coats. Also, if your deck gets a lot of traffic/ direct sunlight/ heavy snow give your deck at LEAST two heavy coats or you’ll end up restaining the next spring.
You can re-coat in 3 or 4 hours depending on humidity, light foot traffic the next day, but I would wait a couple of days before you place furniture etc. on it.
This product can be tinted.
Hi bb, Thank you for your question! The DeckOver can be tinted to the 54 custom colors in our DeckOver brochure (available at your local Home Depot). You can also view the available colors online here: https://www.homedepot.com/b/Paint-Exterior-Stain-Sealers-Deck-Paint-Restoration/BEHR-Premium-DeckOver/N-5yc1vZc7gvZc4x/Ntk-tagger/Ntt-deckover?NCNI-5. no
I would not do either. The price you would pay for the wash you need to use before you use deck over plus the paint itself wouldn't save you money or time and the fact that the product isn't marketed to be indoors would be much riskier then doing what most flooring professionals would suggest. For indoor floors I recommend renting a large sander, purchasing the Behr wood stain and sealing it with the poly you suggested.
Hi SMitten, Thanks for your questions! The DeckOver can be applied to interior wood floors that have been previously coated with a water-based stain, as long as the stain is in good condition. The DeckOver hasn't been tested with a water-based polyurethane, so topcoating it with a clear finish would be experimental. It's best to apply your polyurethane topcoat in a small test area first before applying it to your whole project to ensure you're happy with the finish and performance. Best wishes! - Sara
No, this product is only for outdoor use and a coating cannot be used.
I wouldn't do either of those things. Use a high gloss 100% acrylic floor enamel
Based on my experience-no priming is necessary. The product tends to fill the crevices. However, I just learned that DeckOver is not a good fit for pressure treated lumber in case that is your project.
really not sure, I applied mine over the old deck and it looks really good. I think you can get answers on this from the BEHR website
Hi Joe, Thanks for your question! Applying a separate primer to the bare wood isn't necessary. Once the unsound paint is removed from the surface, we recommend cleaning the area with our All-In-One Wood Cleaner (this will help promote the best adhesion). Once the surface is clean and dry, you can apply 2 coats of DeckOver to the whole surface for a uniform finish. Best wishes! - Sara
Primer is not necessary, however, you may have to use 2 coats of Deck Over.
Joe,no matter what you do, deck over will eventually bubble. peel, and come up. HD already replaced the product for us once. Just look at the overwhelming negative reviews. We used every prepartion conceiveable the 2nd time around and it still did the same thing. Now working on stripping the entire deck to start over.
Was advised by Bear technical support not to try spraying with my Graco X7. Not strong enough.
I am not an expert on spray guns but This paint is very thick and I don’t believe you could use a sprayer. I ended up using a roller and brush to paint my deck a couple months ago.
Big mistake to spray on Deck Over for your deck. You will use double the paint. I have not used this particular Behr brand spraying, but rolled it on. It is pretty thick as I doubt it will be able to be sprayed on.
Hi Cowboy, Thanks for your question! The DeckOver can be applied with an airless sprayer with a .027" - .035" tip and no mesh filter at 2400-3200 psi (this is recommended for experienced users only). Best wishes for your project! - Sara
I'd be really surprised if you could spray this stuff. It's very thick. Additionally, the directions specify a 1/2" nap roller.
I recently painted and old deck and prepped it by sanding and using a pressure washer and deck cleaner. The deck over paint is extremely think and covered my deck without a primer. It turned out very good so I don’t believe you would need a sealer or primer coat.
I don't think that a sealer is necessary because Deck Over completely seals your deck. I have 2 composite decks and I coated them with 2 coats of Deck Over. they look like new and are very durable.
No, don't apply a sealer first! You want the Deck Over to penetrate into the wood surface as much as possible for better adherance. Make sure you have rinsed the wood cleaner off really well too.
No this is supposed to seal that is why you need two coats. Have you read the questions and answers. IT IS HORRIBLE, it cracked in a month They changed the formula and now it sucks.
Hi Joe, Thanks for writing in with your question. You do not need to use a sealer before applying the DeckOver. Apply two coats of the DeckOver at the recommended spread rate. Have a great day! Regards, Giovanna
Don't buy it. It cracks in less than a month, now water has gotten in and it is rotting my deck! No compensation from the company just more paint that is no good. Look up lawsuits over this paint. Now I have a huge mess I need to sand all off and it looks awful because I don't have the money to hire someone to fix it.
Worked great! One coat did it.
Hi Charliehorse, Thank you for your question. Our DeckOver doesn't melt when applied, and it has a durable coating. However, we recommend using the product between 50-90 degrees Fahrenheit. I hope this was helpful, and best of luck on your project. -Edith
Yes i applied to a concrete porch and walkway it is a great product and behr stands behind it with a warrenty . Just be shore to read label as to how to prepare the surface for putting this product on if not done right it may void what warrenty behr has on the product. hope this helps.
DeckOver has not melted on our deck. We did two coats, live in NJ where the weather the last few weeks has been high 80's to 95 and no problem so far this Summer. With two coats this product has covered much better than Behr deck products I have used in the past. Suggestion would be to use your gallon as soon as you come out of HD as this product tends to get thicker when it staid in my garage so did not spread as well. I stirred it as best I could but...nothing is like the machine HD uses.
I have had this product on my decks for two plus years. There is daily exposure to the sun. I have not experienced any 'melting'. It does get very hot to the touch. We did follow the directions EXACTLY and in the high traffic areas there are three coats. This has also gone through two Michigan winters with no visible damage. I'm COMPLETELY sold and highly recommend this product
