Q:Is the bottom machined flat? The one I just bought from the "other guys" rocks a little when it's on my drill press.

Answer This Question

A:  The vise is a perfect addition to my drill press. I use two 3/8” x 2” bolts with a small blocks and washers to extend out from under the drill press plate then torque down with wing nuts. Works at almost ant angle.

A:  I have not found an issue. I am using this in a mill to hold machinable plastic for students to practice using the mill. It is clamped to the mill's bed, and I have seen no rock.

A:  Yes, the bottom is machined flat and does not rock on the drill press stand.

A:  Ours is first class quality and is flat on the bottom. Mike

Use this for my WEN 4214 bench top press. I had to go over the vise tightening all the screws before the crank worked smooth, without jaws binding, for the jaws, otherwise the vise worked great.

Add a little vice to your life. I'm a DIYer with a small (8") Craftsman bench drill press. This one barely bolts to the press' table's slot pattern; it's meant for slightly wider table slots. But using #10 x 1-1/4" machine screws, wide washers and wingnuts I worked up a firmly secure and trued arrangement (see photo). The vice opens to 4-1/4" without the optional non-marring jaw covers. The quality is adequate for a basic no-frills vice. I encountered no issues with any of the parts not moving easily (I did oil the screw and deck).

Works well in my drill press
This vise works well in my 10 inch drill press. I keep it under the worktable for storage and when I need it to hold an item I put it on top of the worktable and fasten it down - see picture. I have used it to hold 1/4 steel for fabricating braces with no issues. Home Depot had the best price for the 4 inch size. Overall the vise has all the precision I need and is well built.

                Long time coming
My brother had one of these for years, we have used it so many times, on projects at his house, I 'm glad I was finally able to get mine. It eliminated a lot of injured fingers and hands from trying to hold smaller objects while drilling holes in them. The vise can be clamped or bolted to the drill press base as needed.

                Good with some limits
This vice is advertised to be used on a drill press. It is fairly heavy but should still be fastened somehow to the press table, either with clamp(s) or by using the screw-hole flanges. At first I could not close or open the vise fully. There was too much binding of the lead-screw. After copious amounts of oil was applied and the screw was operated a few time to each limit of travel, it works acceptably well, but it still binds a little. Make no mistake, this is not a professional quality tool. At the time of this review, a price was not evidently available, so that makes it a bit difficult to judge the "Value". Most similar ones on the internet go for about $30-$40. I would expect this one to be about the same or a bit lower. The jaws are removable and theoretically could be replaced. I don't know how hard it will be to get replacements, although for most folks that would never be required. A possible weak point may be the lead-screw handle which is fastened with a pin. If this fails, it could be fairly easily replaced or repaired somehow.

In use just about every day! With 4 bolts in slotted holes, getting the bolts placed with full traction on each was a piece of cake. So far, I don't even need protectant shims to keep from marring the wood's surface -- the exiting heads are soft enough not to mar. I wish I had gotten it years ago!
