A:Â The hedge trimmer is designed for hedge trimming. Perennial grass varies and can be to thin or have to much moister that it will get caught up in between the blades/teeth.

A:Â Hi Howdy.
Thank you for shopping at The Home Depot.
Yes, you should be able to trim your roses for the winter using the BLACK+DECKER 3.8 AMP Corded Electric Hedge Trimmer. Be sure your blades have been sharpened. A set of dull blades will not give you a nice clean cut.
Please let us know if we can be of further assistance.

Long blade, cuts well, occasional oiling helps
I've been using this hedge trimmer for about 3 years now, I push it quite hard by cutting bougainvillea branches, sometimes thicker than recommended; hedges, vines, seagrape tree branches etc. Once you use it enough you get an idea of what it can handle and what it can't.
I do agree with others that the sawblade is useless.
This week I was using the trimmer and noticed it sounded slower and the blade wasn't moving as fast, in the past I would put some wd40 or 3 in 1 oil on the teeth to help clean up tree sap residue and some lubrication. This time I sprayed the WD40 and tilted the saw up, all of a sudden it came back to life full speed. My guess is the internal mechanism that moves the blade needed some help, I will probably take off the case and check it out. Not recommending for others to try it but it worked for me. :/

Surprisingly Powerful
The first thing I noticed with this trimmer, is that it has more power to it than you think. Its cut through some thicker brush and branches no problem in my yard, without sustaining any damage whatsoever. I also like that it's lightweight, quieter, and cheaper than other corded trimmers I've used. Very easy to maneuver around for a precise cut if you're shaping bushes too. Very happy with this unit.

Junk (See Photos)
The unit began to chatter and smoke and got to where would not run at all. I decided to disassemble it. Even though the unit overall is pretty well designed the opposite side of the main drive gear which runs in a metal strip on one side, the other side apparently runs on bare plastic or something that failed horribly. As you can see in the photographs the area where the spindle sets is nothing but melted plastic around the spindle area. The other side is completely melted away.

Junk
Main gear shaft melted in the plastic case it would have been a good idea to sleeve the plastic case with a brass sleeve. Junk.

the 12 month blade runner
12 months.. that is how long this Black & Decker corded hedge trimmer lasted me. The cost is fair, facile to operate and durable. I used this trimmer to trim to 2 inch mango and avocado tree branches during 2019 and 2020 hurricane season in Miami.
Cutting hedges made all the neighbors jealous because the trimmer is lite weight enough to be creative and shape any bush while making one look like Edward Scissorhands.
I obviously forced the trimmer to cut an excessive amount of dense foliage and branches and why it eventually burned out the motor.
Still, It's inexpensive enough to save hundreds of dollars for a specialist. It's also creates a very meditative experience while trimming hedges in the garden.
Definitely worth the cost and time.

Saw blade on the end is horrible design
The saw blade gets caught on everything when I try to cut to the left. It only works to the right without getting tangled in twigs. I finally got annoyed enough to cut off the end with a grinder and it works great now.

Replaced my old faithful Black+Decker hedge trimmer that finally wore out after many years of service with this new model because it has the amperage needed to trim my thick hedges. Less amperage models would jam up constantly. It's lightweight, and cuts with ease. The one flaw is the newly added saw blade at the end. I imagine it works good for cutting large branches, but it is a hindrance in trimming hedges. It gets caught on everything and found I could only use the trimmers if cutting left to right only. I'm not a fan of "all in one tools" I have other better tools to cut branches.
