Questions & Answers

How big of a planter pot should I use to take this to maturity? Im looking at one that measures 21.5" diameter and 17" high, will that be big enough ?
ByMar 16, 2025

Answer This Question

Choose a pot as large as 24" to 36" across or even a half whiskey barrel. As blackberries grow, over time each original stem sends up more shoots from the roots to form a patch. With a larger pot, your plant will be able to send up new shoots in the subsequent seasons. More of these canes will result in more fruit.

    Is it thornless

    Answer This Question

Pamela, yes, BabyCakes Blackberries are a thornless, dwarf variety. So you will not deal with blackberry thorns with this particular variety. They were bred to be able to plant in a patio pot or in the ground.

Mine arrived with a brown stem. I cut about a half inch off the end and it is brown all the way through. I scratched the surface of the stem and could not see any green. Does that mean it's dead, or is this normal?
      ByJun 10, 2024
      1 Answer |
      Answer This Question

You want to go down to the base of the plant and take a notch out of it there. The tips can often harden up in growth and transport. Look down below towards the bottom where the plant comes out of the soil. Take a small notch there. If it is brown, it is most likely dead (or if it looks like tinder). If you see green, you've just got a dormant plant waking up, and the stem you cut is dead on the end. If the plant is dead, please submit a ticket to us at our website and we can provide you some assistance.

How large is the 33-inch container for the Bushel and Berry BabyCakes blackberry? Why is there no consistency in these descriptions of garden products? It is confusing to see inches, cups, cubic feet, cubic yards, etc.!

          Answer This Question

This is just the bare root. It does not come with a container. We cannot control other listings but ours explains it is just the bare root. If you look at the images it shows the out of box image of what exactly you will receive. Thanks!

Why does it say full shade under the specification section but full sun under details?

            Answer This Question

It should be full sun, there was a typing error with our description and we have fixed it. Thank you for bringing this to our attention!

Healthy bare root arrived and is showing very vigorous growth. Barely 2 weeks since the package arrived and I am incredibly pleased with this purchase.

              EXCELLENT
Babycakes came in a little white bag in a big box. So happy to see that the bare root was fresh and alive with a few little leaves. It looked so happy and cute when I opened the box! TYSM for a live plant because I'm terrible at bare roots but this one I got lucky. I know it's going to be great! Thank you Home Depot, you aways have the best garden plants, I don't bother shopping elsewhere. I just wish your website WOULD SHOW WHAT IS IN STOCK AT MY STORE IN THE GARDEN AREA. FIX YOUR SITE!

I planted after frost, within 1 week of receiving, and it doesn’t like it’s going to survive. No sugnicant growth. Disappointed

Bare roots for planting may seem lifeless, but they're actually just dormant, conserving energy to survive harsh conditions like winter. Once planted and conditions improve, they'll awaken and start growing again. With the onset of warmer temperatures and adequate moisture, the roots will begin to awaken from dormancy, initiating new growth and eventually producing leaves, and fruit. Please note blackberries can take 1 to 4 years to reach full growth. We understand your concern and want to ensure you have a successful gardening experience. If you have any questions or need assistance with planting or caring for your raspberries, please don't hesitate to contact our customer service team. We're here to help and want to make sure you enjoy beautiful, thriving plants. Thank you for choosing Garden State Bulb, and we appreciate the opportunity to assist you. GardenStateBulb

                Arrived in Great Condition
I ordered 2 of the baby cakes blackberry plants and both arrived in great condition. The roots were sealed in moist soil and shipped in a sturdy box. They are healthy plants. I haven’t had the best of luck with online plant orders, but this was the exception. Very pleased.

Garden State Bulb provides bare root product, which is the stick you're referring to. It does not come as a plant, but that is part of the description. We use bare root as it is often a better way to start a plant in the garden. We are sorry to hear you had an issue with your plant and the delivery.
