BeamUP Smart Controller - V2B - Smart Garage Door Opener Conversion Kit - a Home Depot Seeds Program Review
I’ve been making my home “smarter” with lights, switches and locks. Even though I have a garage door sensor that shows the state of the door, I thought it was time to do something with my garage door. I just didn’t want to have to change the door opener since that would be an expensive and time-consuming project. I opted for the BeamUP Smart Controller Smart Garage Door Opener Conversion Kit instead since it was supposed to be able to work with my existing opener that has a photo eye safety system. It does work.
Installation was a bit of a challenge. The directions seem simple enough – install the app on your smart phone, set up the controller, pair the door sensor, mount those piece and – voila! - it works. Installing the app was fine. I set the controller up but when it was part way through the process, the app died and I was unable to continue the setup. I tried starting the setup from the beginning but it said the controller was already registered. I was unable to complete the controller setup, unable to pair the door sensor and it would be foolish to mount it. I sent a message to their support to explain the problem and find out what I needed to do. In all fairness in was Memorial Day weekend so I waited until the middle of the next week before calling their support number where I had to leave a call back number and I received a call later that day where I was assured their support would resolve the issue. One more followup message to support a couple of days later and another call to support after that and the problem was resolved! Final resolution took just under two weeks but I was able to complete the setup process. I wasn’t impressed.
The installation went as expected. The door sensor just sticks to the garage door some velcro tape just like my existing garage door sensor. The controller is wired into the door opener. This isn’t difficult but it does require some connecting wires so you need to be comfortable doing so. The documentation on this is OK but impossible to have explicit instruction for every brand of opener. I got everything setup and tested opening and closing the door via my smart phone and it worked.
Once setup and installed I thought I would setup my access via my Google Assistant which, according to the documentation, is possible. There are even instructions on their website about the steps to do this. The documentation and website were wrong. There was no way to integrate the BeamUP to my Google Home. Uh oh...another message to support was needed to see what the problem was. This time it only took four days to get a response that “Google was a little backed up” but the capability will exist soon. I don’t have an Alexa so I can’t say whether that integrates. Fortunately IFTTT tasks can be used with it and it does add some interesting capabilities that should have been part of the app as far as I’m concerned.
OK. It isn’t all bad. The door sensor and controller are small and unobtrusive. The power indicator and WiFi lights are on constantly but it’s in the garage so it’s not a problem. The funtionality of the app is pretty weak and allows only alerts when opened or closed and an auto close feature. There are IFTTT tasks that allowed integration so the door is closed when August lock is locked (very nice), and closing the door at a given time if left open (also nice). I think these are features that should be in the BeamUP app but they’re not.
This BeamUP Smart Controller Smart Garage Door Opener Conversion Kit actually works once setup properly. I think it’s a bit “gimmicky” and certainly not essential for smart home implementations. The features added by using IFTTT tasks are pretty nice and, if it ever works, integration with my Google Home will be nice. The app is lacking serious features and, for me, wasn’t stable enough to complete the setup. Support is not very good. I have to have to cut them a little slack because of the Covid-19 situation and a holiday weekend, but I certainly expected better. If, like me, you’re interested in trying new technology and are comfortable dealing with some unexpected challenges, this might be for you. Is you’re looking for a “plug and play”, cheaper alternative to a new door opener, you may want to wait until the kinks get worked out of the BeamUP Controller.

BeamUP's Smart Controller & Wireless Door Sentry
This conversion kit allows me to use my smartphone to open and close our garage door, not only that, it keeps tabs on whether the door is open or closed at any time of the day, so no more wondering if you left the garage door open ever again! All you need to do to check the door is open up the app on your phone and it will display whether the door is open or closed. Also, you can open the door from anywhere you have an internet connection using your smartphone. You can also allow others temporary access and ability to open the garage door as needed and later revoke it. Installation is straight forward and easy to do. I was able to have mine up and going in about 15 minutes. You can program the BeamUP to automatically close the door after a preset time also. BeamUP also works with Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple Watch and IFTTT. You can secure the smartphone app also if you have an Apple iPhone, whereby you can choose to use Face ID or a pin code to open the smartphone app, thereby making it more secure if your phone would get lost or stolen, your BeamUp app is safe from being used.
This device has worked well and I took out the garage remotes in the car, which always worried me because the car parked outside the garage can be broken into and then then the garage remote taken and used to open the garage door. Highly recommend this device.

My intent was to utilize my tablet which is a wi-fi cellular tablet. It was set to a 2.4 GHz network. Set up the app "beam home", fine. Powered up the controller, step 2 from instructions, ok. When it came to step 3 programming the controller it would not connect to the wi-fi no matter what I tried. Got with a friend to try it on their cell phone. Programmed the controller, set up an account, but wait, the app would not bring up step 4, "scan the wireless door sensor code". It went on to say "unplug the controller head to the garage. This didn't sound correct but went to the garage to temporarily install. Once installed went to the app and it basically said "No Door". Ok, I am done spent probably 3+ hours trying to install. I was so hoping this would work, maybe it will for you. This was my experience.

Very disappointed with this Product and support. I haven't even finished to install it, I been waiting 2 weeks for Beam up support to fix a problem with updating some updates issues to the 2 different app stores for for it to work correct, was unable to connect to our Alexa, I also noticed that I had to move the wifi for a stronger signal to the beam up. below you can see photo's of the installed beam up. I will update this review once the problem is corrected.

Great idea, especially for the folks that want to control everything in their lives via their cell phone.
Everything in one box and the controller and receiver simply stick on the door and your opener. Comes with a power supply and controller wiring that only requires a screwdriver to attach two (low voltage) leads.
The instructions are clear and precise and simple to follow. Except for using a ladder to install the controller, everything else is basically plug and stick. Hard to make it much simpler.
A good working WIFI is required and comes with "sharing" features, permissions, and alerts.
Beam Up also sells complete openers with or without WIFI features. My only caveat is for very little money one can purchase a remote opener, especially if one only wants to open and close the door.
The cost of this one is NOT unreasonable for all it does... one just needs to use all its features to appreciate it. It will also work with ALEXA!!!
Lastly, I can not find any labeling to indicate where this product is made. Could it be possible they are manufactured in El Segundo CA?
