Q:Only guaranteed for 5 years. How long before the plastic becomes brittle from sunlight exposure and cracks?

Answer This Question

A:  For customers residing near coastal areas, we recommend our Ultra series door. The corrosive nature of saltwater air and spray can lead to premature rusting of steel doors. However, Ultra doors, crafted from high-density polyethylene plastic, offer a resilient alternative. Additionally, our most superior product we make at BILCO, is our steel doors. The steel doors will occasionally need a repaint throughout their lifetime, but the steel doors will not break down. They do come with a 5 year functionality warranty on any part.

Replaced my old, rusting steel bulkhead with this modern, well built cellar door. Installation was fairly easy, and it looks great. There is a slight gap on the threshold so I used a garage door rubber bottom seal on the threshold itself which both fills the gap and keeps any water out. I have had no leakage from the door either at the top where it meets the house or at the threshold, the big test will be when two or three feet of snow pile up. The best feature of this door is how light it is. While I am not elderly yet, it was getting tough to open the old steel doors. This polyethylene door is light, and the door opening hardware is reliable and easy to install.

    Doors Not Secure
The overall appearance of this door is great. I have had it for 4 years now. It qwas easy to i stall but there are two major flaws. The gas door extensions don't hold if there is any wind. But the major problem is that the locked latch is with a metal bar as with any typical bilco door . If you securely as directed from inside and go outside and pulled on the door handle to open with any effort , the doors flex and the metal bar slides right out.

I love this door! It was so easy to install, took 2 adults about 2 hours. It looks great and so light weight and easy to open and close. Worth the extra $ to go with the polyethylene verse metal.

Very easy to assemble and install even for a 57 yr old woman by herself! Had to make a small modification on my 160 yr old stone wall with a home made header (not finished in the pics) and also made a pressure treated frame for the door, hidden now by landscaping. Pricey - but once and done is my motto!

Replaced Steel Bilco basement door I installed in 1993 with the Ultra. Good product. It was not easy to install. But I persevered . Learned the chemical virtues of Polyethylene and polyurethane caulking.

          Excellent value and easy maintenance
I've installed dozens of these door systems, and to this day, I've had very few callbacks of any sort. The product itself wasn't ever a problem, but simply misplacement of a sprinkler head, or excessive tree leaves (debris) causing the water channels to be blocked. These ultimately were attributed to causing the door system to leak during heavy rains. The systems are designed "NOT" to be hermetically sealed with gaskets, therefore they require air to enter the bulkhead / stairwell area. This helps with keeping internal temperatures cooler during summer months. The perimeter of each door has a specifically designed spacing between the housing, allowing air to enter, creating / and exchanging air currents in the well area, in conjunction with the the housing side vents. This helps promote moisture evaporation, and help keep the unit dry inside. These door systems are essentially like any other door system to your home. They need to be utilized, and maintained, which simply means to be cleaned from time to time, otherwise they can get overwhelmed by wind driven debris. It goes without saying that you wouldn't allow your front entry door to become clogged with leaves, dust, dirt and bugs, so why should this door be any different ? With no painted surfaces, other than the powder coated hinges on the inside, the exteriors are as maintenance free as physically possible, requiring just a soap and water bath once or twice a year, more or less, depending on the homes particular environmental conditions, and orientation of sun exposure. This is an ideal situation for those of us who prefer not to spend their weekends painting part of their home as a maintenance regime would require.
