A:Â Thank you for your question, Muriel. The BonJour Chef's Torch itself does not emit any smoke, however, depending on the foods the torch is used on, the foods may emit smoke as you're browning or caramelizing. This may or may not cause your smoke detector to alarm due to sensitivity. We suggest to first use in a well ventilated area and please follow the use and care included with the torch to ensure proper use. A:Â Try reducing the amount of gas coming out, if the gas flow is set too high it will extinguish the spark before it can light,

Works Great!
This torch worked great! I have used it for Creme Brulee (see photo) and also to melt cheese on top of a dish. Its actually easier to use than I expected. The flame instensity control works well. The lock "on" function works well.
One note is that the torch is shipped empty and must be filled before using. So plan to buy a can of butane (~$5). Its really nice that it can be refilled cheaply.
Overall, I am very happy with this and I'm glad its party of my kitchen arsenal.
I love cooking, and have wanted a chef's torch for a while, and after I've used it, I can think of a lot of things I will be using it for. So far, I've used it on meringue, and toasting coconut, which was a big success, and I didn't burn the meringue as I usually forget it under the broiler.
From now on, I will be using the torch, instead of relying on the oven broiler with better, even, controlled results, and I am sure it will be a tool I will use quite often for browning, toasting and carmelizing instead of it being a specialty tool as time goes on.
The instructions are easy to follow for filling and igniting and using, it comes with a removable base, which is handy.
If you love to cook, I think that you will find a lot of ways to use it for your meal preparations. I wish I had got one of these years ago!
A good starter torch. Not too fancy, basic enough to learn on. Of course it doesn't come with butane fuel. I haven't used it too much yet, but it works and I'm learning. I use it to cheat sometimes with crisping up chicken skin! I have yet to make a creme brule, but we shall see. So far I've only used it on savory dishes and basically just to test this new torch out. So far no complaints.
Granted, I haven't used this chef's torch a great deal yet, but so far it's great. Very versatile and easy to use. It has a lot of power. So much in fact, that I had to put it on almost the lowest setting to get a small enough flame to prevent literally torching the food beyond edibility.
Please note that it does not come with the required butane fuel so you'll need to buy a can before it can be used. If there is one thing that I don't particularly care for it's the way you fill it up with fuel. Although it has a little window to show the fuel level, you have to turn it up-side-down to fill it, which means you basically have to squirt a little bit of fuel, then turn it right-side-up to check the level, then repeat until it reaches the full line on the window.
Other than that, it's a really nice, high quality chef's torch. Once filled with fuel, it lights right up with just a single push of the button!!
My husband got this Chef's Torch for me and my first thought was what the heck? But now I use it about every day. I love to cook so it is great for roasting red peppers, even tomatoes. I made a pie with meringue just so I could use the torch to brown the top lol! It has really made me branch out and make dishes I had only had in fine restaurants. It is great to caramelize sugar and melt cheese on top of onion soup. One great thing is that it does have a fuel level indicator so you won't run out of fuel in the middle of a dish. I really love this Chef's Torch and if you love to cook I would suggest getting one.
I received the product, well packaged and in perfect condition. After reading the instructions and warnings, I inverted the product and filled it with a product recommended by the manufacturer. I set the flame adjustment slide on the side of the torch to mid range, pushed the safety lock down then pressed the ignition button and the unit flamed as advertised. I adjusted the flame to the desired amount and then released the button. The product is well manufactured with safety in mind and the Creme Brulee recipe included is delicious. I would recommend this product.
