This antenna is listed as 170 - 860 MHz. IS THIS ACCURATE? Because channels 2 - 6 are 54 - 88 MHz. I need a new antenna but not one that won't receive channels 2, 4 & 5 here in Los Angeles.
Asked by: OLdweeb
Lots of bad information and myths on the web. This antenna picks up from vhf channel 7 through uhf channel 51. And yes, vhf channels 2-6 are in FACT still in use all across the country and many UHF stations are moving to the 2-6 VHF channels due to the FCC repack.

The specifications claim it to be a Yagi antenna with a gain of 28 dB. The specification doesn't what the dB rating is relative to. Normally, it would be dBi (relative to isotropic). There is no way an antenna of this size could come remotely close to 28 dBi. Also the design shown in the picture is a log-periodic ( a good choice for a wide band antenna like this). Typical gain for an antenna of this type is 6 to 8 dBi. Why is the claimed gain so much higher than reasonable values for an antenna of this type?

If you are running more than one tv you may want to add an amplifier. Home Depot has one by Wineguard that will do the job. I have this amp on an older antenna and run five tv's and doing a fine job.

what is the signal reception range of this antenna?

Asked by: george
"range" is a misnomer being foisted upon the public by marketing dweebs. A simple wire held up in the air can pickup a very powerful signal from hundreds of miles away and on a mountain top. The best antenna in the world won't receive anything if there is a significant obstacle in the way. The factors involved in receiving TV signals strong enough for your TV to decode are: 1) strength and direction from the broadcast antenna 2) obstacles between your antenna and broadcast antenna 3) frontside gain of your antenna From your location in Mertzon, TX you should be able to get 3 stations quite well depending on the factors listed: https://nocable.org/availability-report/zip/76941-mertzon-tx Point your antenna east-north-east.

However, being of Chinese manufacture, I had to modify the plastic end piece to get the smallest elements to mount and one of the middle elements was bunged up so badly I had to rethread it. Once assembled and installed, this antenna does a fine job. To call an antenna "Full HD 1080p" is condescending to the layman. "Full HD 1080p" is in the broadcast signal, not in the antenna. A piece of wire thrown out on the ground is also a "Full HD 1080p" antenna. If you touch the center tap of the coax connected to your TV and put your hand in the air, you are now a "Full HD 1080p" antenna. Same goes for the distance rating of an antenna. That's stupid. What's important in an antenna is the gain, and the frequency range tuning. Front to back ratio is important if you have competing channels and want to favor one over the other.

I live in Houston, which is very flat, so the towers aren't very high above the grade. I live a little over thirty miles from them, with about 5 degree's of separation. I can get over 100 channels, but for some I would have to learn Spanish, Asian, and get a whole lot more religious. Of the thirty that I fined useful, 1comes in over 80, 28 over 70 and 1over 60 percent signal strength. I have a TIVO box which need near 60 per cent signal not to pixalate. I do have this antenna 20 feet in the air, 50 feet of high shield coax, and no amplifier. The plus of this antenna, is that it has a lot of elements for its size {it is small}., It covers both UHF and VHF equally, which in important in Houston because 3 of the main channels are VHF high. I would rate this antenna a good, median range antenna, and is a very good value, for it's size and price.

I live in La Selva and have tried several antennas with OK to dismal results. I went on line to the FCC website where they will give you a prediction of reception as well as a compass heading to aim your antenna. I bought this Yagi because it was low cost, had decent gain but did not have the larger elements for the no longer used old low VHF frequency channels. The English/Chinese instructions are a bit terse. It helps if you are mechanically inclined. You need a few basic tools. The assembly is straightforward once you figure out where to put the director elements (look closely at the picture with the instructions). There were one more set of director elements than there were holes in the center element. So I recommend you line up all of the aluminum elements from long (VHF frequencies) to short (upper end of UHF frequencies) and then install the long elements closest to the antenna coax terminal, and then install the next shorter ones and shorter ones until you run out of holes. I installed this antenna on my roof on what used to be a Direct TV dish antenna mast (not very tall). I do not have "line of sight" to the Salinas transmitters, but it's close to line of sight looking through several big trees and looking over a low hill. I aimed the antenna toward Salinas (per the FCC compass recommendation),connected the coax cable from antenna to TV, and then went to my TV and did the channel search. Result was a total of 41 channels! Several were Spanish language channels which I deleted on my TV (I don't speak Spanish) to reduce the number channel choices. Reception of digital channels is excellent. Since the video feed from (e.g. KION, KSBW, KTEH) comes directly from the studio, the video quality is excellent; probably better than satellite and cable (the video feed runs through several servers to satellite and cable service and I think with decreasing video quality). Plus there is about a minute signal delay from Comcast compared to the antenna signal. Bad weather can adversely affect the signal (as it will for Satellite service too) but that's temporary once the storm passes by. This product is well made, it is a bit of fun to assemble and it worked very well for me.

This is the perfect back up antenna for my digital TV receiver as well as having the FM Radio antenna section for my Stereo Receiver. It is all aluminum construction and Very sturdy. Assembly was simple but a bit tedious since you have to screw in all the little elements in the right order. One Big Plus was that it came with 50' of outdoor rated coax cable!

I connected this product along with the Winegard Boost XT to what had been the main cable input to our house. By doing this I was able to get reception on all of our TV's that had been previously on cable. We are able to get all of the local channels but reception will vary depending on your location.
