Q:How can it split both ways when it only has a wedge on one end?
by|Oct 20, 2023

Answer This Question

A:  It appears it splits on the down stroke and on the up stroke. That would account for the fast cycle times. It looks like the cylinder is inside the beam and the wedge is on top, so the cylinder isn't in the way as the wedge moves in both directions.

Ok The Boss 20 Ton Gas Dual Splitter Awesome Splitter. This Unit is Heavy and can split wood fast.I bought the four way wedge and even spilts the wood even faster. Now I did have a few issues like the trays bent in the center after the first use and the motor antivibration mounts for the engine cracked and came loose after the first run. So I called customer Service and was informed not to use the plastic antivibration motor mounts they will not hold up and they are not really for this application but Briggs&Stratton put them in there anyway. As for the Trays that bent Boss will Warranty them for me as soon as the parts come off of backorder. So all good there. As for Assembly you will need Another person to help you lift the parts out of the shipping Crate.Don't attempt to do it alone its Heavy, especially the Ram beam.It was pretty straight forward easy assembly use the shipping crate as a work bench works really well and all bolts and hardware are clearly marked and lettered and numbered to make a Breeze of assembly.Make sure you use pipe Thread tape on the pump fittings otherwise the hose connections will Vibrate loose.I had it happen. You will need to buy Hydraulic Fluid get a Five gallon Bucket you will have a little left over for later topping off.You also need Oil for the motor I used the Synthetic Blend grade 10W30w for winter and summer use. Starting was easy Also Lubricate the Square end where the ram slides back with a WD40 spray to cut down on wear.So there you have it So Far I give this unit a Five Star rating I used it three times and Split alot of wood and it splits Wet Locust with no problem and thats some tough wood.

      The Boss
This is a good log splitter work well and fast! But when I was putting it together it had a 1/2" gap between the rail frame and the hitch. I had to make two (2) shims of 1/4" for each side to take up the gap. I also had to buy Six (6) longer bolts. If you don't do this it will not pull straight down the road if towed, and you can't install all six (6) bolts that the instruction till you to remove to install the hitch. When I call The Boss's Customer service number and left a massage they never called me back. I was never able to Speak to any one at all about the gap between the frame rail and the hitch. I had no issues with Home Depot. The Boss made short work of my wood pile!

        Heavy Duty Quality Splitter
Purchased at HD 3/2021. Assembly was easy for 2. I use Mobil 1 ATF and $100 4 way splitter. Worth it! Good splitting capabilities for Oak. Have towed it. No reflectors or lights. Hydraulic fluid dipstick cap weld broke, replaced under warranty. Hydraulic fluid leaks out the filler cap. Customer service said to clean hydraulic system. I think the tank level per the dipstick is overfull. Messy and stained concrete. Engine bolts loosened . Choke lever is gone, not sold separately. Kohler engine is plenty strong. Unless buying an Eastonmade at 3 times this price, I would buy a Boss again.

          Overall, I'm satisfied
Likes: Duel direction splitting - no wasted motion. Seems very sturdy and well made. Haven't found anything it couldn't split yet. Customer support was excellent. Problems/Dislikes: Hydraulic fluid overflowed the first few times I used it. Customer support says it will do that if you fill it up to the lines on the dipstick - apparently it's not calibrated correctly. The trailer is not well balanced. Too much tongue weight - difficult to move by hand. I wish it had larger side shelves
