About This Product

Brinly's BS-26BH tow-behind broadcast spreader makes it easy to attain a dense, green yard. Its large rust-proof polyethylene hopper holds 2.5 cubic feet (125 lbs.) of material, making it ideal for homeowners with lawns ½ acre and larger. Use your spreader every season of the year to apply grass seed, fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides, fungicides, even sand and ice melting agents.Regular lawn feeding, weed control, overseeding and pest elimination help keep your lawn healthy, vibrant and growing strong. Regular fertilization, annual seeding and eliminating harmful insects allows your lawn's root system to grow thicker, crowding out opportunistic weeds and giving it the resilience it needs to survive the stresses of heat, drought and foot traffic. The tubular steel frame, powder-coat finish, enclosed nylon gears and stainless steel interior hardware prevent rust and corrosion. The patented Directional Spread Pattern Control feature allows the user to adjust for different particle sizes and weights, providing uniform coverage for a beautiful stripe-free lawn. Like it's larger brother the BS36BH broadcast spreader, the BS-26BH uses our Autoflow design to automatically stop the flow of material when you stop your mower, eliminating waste and turf burn from overapplication.

Highlights

  • High-capacity hopper: Extra large, rust- and dent-proof poly hopper holds 125 lb. (2. 5 cu. Ft.) of seed, fertilizer, Ice melt and more to maximize the time spent spreading vs. Refilling the hopper. Ideal size for yards 1/2 acres or larger.
  • Lasting durability: All parts that come in contact with corrosive fertilizers are designed to last, including the heavy polyethylene hopper with stainless steel hardware, spinner shaft, and agitator. Glass-filled nylon gears are fully enclosed with nylon gearbox for additional protection.
  • Patented autoflow with spread pattern control: Brinly tow spreaders are designed for professional-level results. Different materials spread very differently; directional spread pattern control allows you to center and even-out the distribution pattern for a balanced application of any material. The patented autoflow technology stops material from spreading when the tractor stops - eliminating waste and burns that commonly occur with other tow-behind spreaders.
  • Easy calibration: calibration controls feature an easy-to-reach locking dial for secure rate-gate settings. Brinly provides hundreds of pre-calibrated settings to help you get to work and get the job done more accurately and efficiently.
  • Universal hook-up: a single, heavy-duty universal Hitch Pin is included to easily attach the spreader to any rider or tractor and most any ZTR or ATV.
  • Spread width up to 12ft: High-speed, 6:1 glass-filled nylon gears provide widest spread pattern at slowest speeds.
  • Quick 30 minute assembly: includes pictorial assembly manual with fastener skin pack; each part is matched to each assembly step. Assembly video also available on Brinly YouTube channel
  • Made in the USA: Trusted Since 1839, Brinly-Hardy Company has been dedicated to providing quality, durable, and innovative Lawn & Garden Products built in the USA

Q:Do you need to install chains on the wheels to ensure they don't slide on snow/ice?

      Answer This Question

A:  Bill, thank you for your question regarding chains for your BS26BH Spreader. Adding chains may give you an added sense of stability as you use the spreader on snow/ice. You may consider the use of chains on your Tractor/Mower as well. Safety is paramount as you apply your ice melt during the winter months! Good spreader but ...
Good quality with easy to follow instructions. The first issue is you have to buy the handle extension accessory. Not a big deal just inconvenient. Additionally, the bottom of the spreader is flat so the last of the material sits on the bottom until you hit a bump to get it to the dump chute. Engineers - please make the container more bowl shaped. And finally, the "Handle Stop" (90 degree piece of metal to stop the handle at the proper adjustment) bends easily with the extended handle.

Well made and easy to setup spreader
After eady assembly, I used it the same day with no issues. Added an extension to the handle to be able to use while driving the tractor. Only issue is the sticker for the settings is off 1 1/2, even with the adjustable setup. Otherwise this is a well build American made product. Will be looking at them for future purchases

Good Spreader - Much Assembly Required
I purchased this spreader so I can easily tow it behind a Zero Turn mower to allow me to cover my 1/3 acre lot in no time. I am a senior and working smarter not harder is what it is all about. I have assembled several items like this over the years and this was somewhat difficult as there are a lot of moving parts. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being I need someone else to assemble the item I give this an 8. I recommend.

So far this year only used it once, and it worked well. It is not a commercial duty spreader. But I think if I take good care of it it should last. I made some modification to mine. I reworked the spreader handle and added a ball hitch.

            incorrect Parts
Just purchased today. You will have to bear with me while i explain the problem. And note: this is not a case of their having accidentally left off parts, but is an actual ERROR in the parts supplied on the parts card vs. what is shown on the instructions and what works IRL. This is in other words an issue they need to correct at the factory. First, the instructions. They indicate two 2-1/4” ( two and ONE quarter inch) long bolts for attaching the gage plate to spreader on Figure 10b. of the English language instructions. However, on the parts card, they provide (and label) bolts that are 2-3/4” (two and THREE quarters inch) long. When you use the provided bolt, it is impossible to tighten the gage plate assembly attachment to the spreader tow arm. You can’t “close the gap” so to speak, as the bolts are much too long. A 2-1/4” long bolt is what is required as the instructions state, not the provided 2-3/4” long bolts. This is such an annoying issue that I am posting this poor review here, in order to warn potential buyers they may not be able to complete the assembly with the parts provided. I am also attaching photos to illustrate the problem. It is now late on Saturday. I will either have to make an extra trip to Home Depot tomorrow to obtain the correct bolts at my expense or wait until Monday to contact the manufacturer and then await their shipping me the correct bolts. That is the reason for the poor review. This is a horrible annoyance you think could have been rectified long before now.

Hello, Thank you for the detailed description of your issue. We have reviewed our instruction manual and the accompanying parts list. In our review, we have found that we do have an error in the manual. The 2 1/4" bolt length is incorrect. Presently, we are working to correct that. The 2 3/4" bolt will work properly as long as the "pivot bushings" are installed along with the washers. If you have additional questions please feel free to give our Customer Service Team a call at 877-728-8224. Again, thank you for your review. Brinly

              Spreader Revies
Spreader was fairly easy to assemble except that the hole in the axle that the cotter pin goes in to attach to the agitator was not drilled in the center of the axle. Had to enlarge the hole in the plastic coupling to get it to line up with the axle hole and get the cotter pin through it. Otherwise pretty simple to assemble. Having the parts all shrink wrapped step by step made it easy to put together. Suggest reading through the maintenance part of the manual before assemble and having some axle grease on hand to assemble it with for lubrication.

              My Second Brinly Tow-Behind Spreader
This weekend I purchased my second, Brinly tow-behind broadcast spreader. The new spreader is almost the same design and is made from the same type and quality of materials as the old one. The first one provided over 40 years of reliable service. The spreader fan finally broke from age and use. My old spreader could have been easily repaired, but I felt that I had gotten more than my money's worth. Home Depot had this spreader in stock at a local store. I ordered it on-line and it was ready for pick-up in about an hour. As usual, I received excellent, friendly and prompt service, from Home Depot and their knowledgeable associates. First the pros: No parts were missing in the box. All small parts were organized and placed on a cardboard panel with a thin, clear plastic film holding them firmly, in position. The small parts were grouped, laid out in the order of assembly, and labeled. This allowed each part to be removed and used when needed. The step-by-step instruction manual is well written, easy to read and understand, is professionally illustrated and very detailed. The instruction manuals are written in English, Spanish and French. The manuals include a detailed parts reference drawing and a parts list. The parts and other materials are high quality and made with stainless steel or composite material to control corrosion. Did I mention my first Brinly spreader lasted 40 years? The axle is a solid bar of steel, not a metal tube, which can bend under a load. The only tools required for assembly were a knife to cut the packing tape, a pair of pliers, two 7/16" wrenches and two 1/2" wrenches. Assembly was easy, quick and step-by-step, with no surprises. Everything fit and all holes were precisely positioned. The tires were mounted on the rims and inflated. This spreader has a neat feature, which allows the fertilizer or seed to be spread about 90 degrees to the left side or right side; or about 180 degrees, like a normal spreader. This feature reduces waste when spreading material beside a sidewalk, or driveway. The flow control lever is easy reach from my tractor seat. Now the con: The only issue I experienced has already been mentioned by others. The friction lock for the flow lever does not maintain its setting and allows the lever creep to the closed position. As mentioned by others, a bungee cord will solve this problem. Operation: The universal hitch will fit most lawn and garden tractors. A hitch pin and hairpin is included. The spreader is easy to operate and load. The height of the hopper is perfect for loading. The hopper will hold about three 35 lb. bags of fertilizer, which is well within the weight limit rating, of 125 pounds. A plastic, see through hopper cover is included. The flow control handle stop sets the amount of material to be broadcast. Broadcast coverage of material appears to be evenly spread. After use clean-up is easy, with water from a water hose. Company information: This spreader is made in the USA. Brinly-Hardy Company is located in Indiana and has been in business since 1839. I can see why. They use quality materials and build a quality product. The manual includes the company's web site address, phone numbers, e-mail addresses and warranty information. I would recommend this spreader to my friends. I give it Five Stars out of five.

              perfect for my needs
I bought this recently because the one I was using was very difficult to use behind my garden tractor. The new one I purchase has the extended handle which I purchased at the same time. It works perfectly behind my Cub Cadet garden tractor and I love it. I have always had good luck with Brinly and this is no exception. Thank you Brinly

              Disappointed
Did research and this looked to be a good product. Assembly went well with the exception of attaching the guage plate to the spreader; instructions were vague there and I had to take off and reattach to get it right. Have used the spreader but the fan is hanging up and not spreading evenly. Also a tire went down so I added air and it leaked down again so took the wheel off and the tube is rotten. Tried to pull it out of the tire and it split apart; so I have been somewhat disappointed since this appeared to be a well made product.
