Q:I purchased this around two weeks ago. I wired the hot with the blue wire and neutral with the two white wires. It never stated the ?one switch? to turn on both. Only a two switch control. Where?s the drawing for a one switch for both to turn on the same?

Answer This Question
A: If you want a single switch to turn on the light and fan at the the same time, connect the black wire AND the blue wire to hot and the white to neutral. If you wanted separate switches for the light and fan you would connect the black wire to a separate hot and the blue wire to a separate hot (one to each switch) and tie the neutral (white) wires together.

Q:I have an old BROAN-NUTONE bathroom ceiling fan that is not working.
The MOD is JA2B089N+ 86423
With SER 45S!
I can not find this model number !
What do you recommend ?
Can I get the motor fan assembly or the whole new unit?
Please advise.

Answer This Question
A: My personal advice to you would be to purchase a complete new unit. While a useable motor may be available from a secondary market source, the total cost of the unit should justify acquiring a complete new assembly without potential assembly or function issues.
by|Jan 13, 2023
A: Hi Alfred,
Thank you for your question on the HB80RL ventilation fan and light. The models you have provided of JA2B089N+ 86423 are number from the motor. They are not the model number of the unit that this motor is installed in. The motor number of JA2B089N crosses to our part number of 0695B000. This part is currently available and in stock. Please contact your local Home Depot store for parts ordering assistance. For further questions, please contact Broan-NuTone Customer Service at 800-558-1711.

Dumper is stuck open
Everyone who gave this product 5 stars, I recommend to do a smoke test while the fan is off. I had three of these installed in my house and all three had the same issue - the dumper was stuck open. Once it opens, its design prevents it from closing, which causes either sucking in cold air, or letting hot air out. I removed two of them from my bathrooms and inspected closely. The flap in the dumper is not correctly balanced and it's unable to go back to closed position once it opens. I "fixed" one of them by glueing a small metal nut to the edge of the flap, just to move the center of gravity a bit closer to the edge. It helped, the dumper closes now and my bathroom doesn't feel that cold anymore.
Another one was replaced with a higher-end Broan model, with allegedly "improved dumper design". The so called "improved design" doesn't make the dumper close either. Before installing it, I glued a nut again.
I have one more left to replace and I think I'll go with a different brand this time.

Hi Mariusz, Thank you for your review of model HB80RL. We are sorry to hear you are disappointed with this unit. The damper is counter balanced to stay slightly open. The reason behind that is the light function. Because we give the consumer the ability to operate the light separately from the fan on it's own switch, we had to have a way for the heat that would develop inside the housing escape. So with the damper slightly open, this allows the heat to escape. Please reach out to our Technical Team directly at 888-336-6151 if we can be of any assistance.

I replaced a10 yr old Broan 679L fan and the Nutone is much more quiet. The light cover is a nicer look. I have to solve a minor condensation drip problem that I now have, but overall the reduced sound level alone is worth buying this exhaust fan.

I owe my husband an apology
My husband installed this in our bathroom. He is not a handy man but he tries. It went surprisingly well, easy to replace the old one and no unexpected hassles. Here’s where it gets tricky. First time flipping it on in the morning and I thought, “he didn’t do this right. It’s not even running.” BUT IT WAS! It is so super quiet compared with our old fan that I seriously didn’t even know it was on. It’s done a great job fighting the clouds upon clouds of steam generated by four daughters who have never heard the term “water conservation.” The only drawback: it may be too quiet to cover up embarrassing bathroom noises. Great value, easy install, super improvement for us.

Just installed. Good quality product. Met my expectations. Installation was a little challenging since I replaced an existing fan. Had no access from above the ceiling. To minimize ceiling dry wall cutting, I removed the side hangers and attached new fan with screws through holes I drilled in the unit’s side wall. And, the unit’s duct attachment size was slightly larger than the existing flex duct. I opened up the existing duct’s attachment point by making several diagonal cuts at the end of the existing duct. Then taped the two pieces together with duct tape. Solution worked fine.

Check details on your old fan first!
This was a great upgrade on the very loud original fan in a small bathroom. This one loud enough to know it’s on which I like, but quiet enough too. More efficient than old one, too. I like that you can select bulb type on this model. An LED bulb works fine with no buzz. If you are replacing an existing fan, I suggest you pay attention to where the duct and electrical connections are first, and compare to where they are on this model. I had to modify the 4 inch pipe with an aluminum flex piece since the connection was on a different side on this model. And the wire connection was also a few inches longer to a corner on this model. My house wire just made it without modifying. So I had to spend considerable time in the attic in installing this. If you are replacing an existing fan and don’t have attic access this fan probably won’t work for you unless the design of the old fan is the same.

I got this fan a few weeks ago when my bathroom fan started "squealing" occasionally. i did not want to crawl in the attic until cooler days prevailed, but last week it finally gave up the ghost. So, on a not too scorching Saturday morning I got the nerve to climb up in the attic to replace the fan. Installation was fairly easy, due to the fact, as I discovered, that the previous owner never attached the fan to the ceiling. It was just sitting over the hole. Because of this, I had to screw a 2x4 brace between the rafters, as I wanted to use the existing opening and did not want to reposition the fan. The fan does come with tabs to bend out which would normally set the fan flush with a 1/2" ceiling, unfortunately someone had put an extra layer of sheetrock on the ceiling and I could not use them. You can see the tab and my solution in the picture attached. Once I had the fan flush and level with the ceiling, I could attach the 2x4 between the rafters and attach the fan housing to it.
The fan has several attachments and is designed for old work, new work, and as in my case, remodel work. Apart from working in the confined space installation was simple. Once installed the light kit and vent cover was attached with a single nut. The light kit has two holes which gives additional flexibility to the placement and orientation of the finished look. The wiring provides the ability to switch the fan and light independent of each other, or just tie the leads together to use one switch for both. (blue& black and whites together) We put a 10 watt LED (60W equivalent) and it gives a decent amount of light for a small 8'x5' bathroom. Using LED's you could always increase the bulb output if you need more light.
The only downside I have with this unit, is common to most of this type. The outlet vent comes out the side and is designed, I guess, for a sidewall exhaust. You need either a 90 degree bend or enough room to insert a flex pipe if you are venting through a roof. It would be nice if there was a knock out to do so, much like a range hood has. Finally, the fan is whisper quiet. I walk by the bath and can only tell the fan is on because the light is on also. It's a nice product.
