Should the impeller shaft on the motor be able to move (in and out) a tiny bit? I'm trying to quiet my old fan and I'm wondering if I should get a new one because this shaft moves.
Asked by: Nick
I suspect that end-play is not a factor for determining whether the motor should be replaced or not. When I inspected my motor, there was nothing obviously wrong with it while looking at it on the workbench, but it sounded like a small airplane when it was installed and running.

With the fan blades straight up and down, how does this pull the air up into the duct work system? Don't the blades need to be tilted to pull air up (or push it down) as a ceiling fan works?
Asked by: Trudes
The fan creates negative pressure by blowing air into the ducting thus pulling air from the space. For a more detailed explanation, please contact our Technical Support Department at 800-637-1453.

Have a Broan Model #676-D - can I use this replacement motor and impeller?? If not, what is available?
Asked by: BobG
This motor and impeller are designed for a number of fans. However, this will not work in the 676-D. Contact the Broan Customer Service Department at 800-558-1711 and ask about part number S97015157. Thank you.

Con this motor replace a 662/688
Asked by: Runner
This replacement motor is used on several different models. It will fit the 662 or 688. It's always best to contact us direct if you are uncertain. It's also best to purchase a replacement part based on the model number instead of just a picture. Thank you.

Here's the steps: 1) Ensure that the power is turned off. 2) Snap-out the bezel. 3) Remove the light bulb. 4) Remove the cap nut that suspends the cover, and remove the cover. 5) Unplug the fan and the light bulb. 6) Remove the screw next to the outlet. 7) Pull down on the panel that holds the motor/fan assembly. 8) Remove the existing impeller by pulling it away from the motor. 9) Remove the 2 nuts that mount the motor. 10) Install the new parts in the reverse order.

It was an almost exact replacement, the plastic fan is the same diameter, but less than what it replaced. Even though I cleaned the fixture out thoroughly, this replacement fan started making extra noise after about 30 minutes of use and hasn't stopped yet. I would have returned it, but don't want to bother being without the fan for a day nor having to uninstall and reinstall it again.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Research first I installed my bathroom fan 30 years ago and lost track of the model number. This replacement motor fits precisely, however it is undersized and the impeller is smaller than the original. I was concerned whether the velocity of the moving air would open the two exhaust one way valves. It does, but the real test will be in the winter when outside air is more dense and the roof valve may have frost or light icing to deal with.

My husband was able to use the in situ housing of the 20 year old fan which rattled as it was slowing down (similar, but not the same Broan product) and fit the new motor and blades in. With the new ceiling cover purchased separately at approx. $8 we had a "new" fan for $28 which does not rattle and does the job! Beats over $100 for a totally new one!

I actually purchased two of these replacement motor/fan assemblies for two twenty-year old bathroom ventilation fans, which had seen better days. They were relatively easy to install, with only a slight modification in the mounting bracket, and required only the most basic of tools: screwdriver, pliers, a sturdy step ladder, and a steady hand. Once firmly in place and plugged into the fan housing and outlet, the fan assembly performed well and was quieter than the original. Very pleased! John

It rattles the whole house. I fabricated a damper which helps, but a few quality control efforts to balance the thing would be appreciated. I wonder if the fact that the motor was free to bounce around in the packaging was the cause of the unbalance.

The first thing I noticed was that the new impeller was noticeably smaller than the original and the mounting hardware was setup differently. After reversing the hardware and installing, it did move the air better than the older original fan but was a bit noisier as if it was slightly out of balance.
