Help! my new wood is cupping. What can I do to fix it?

Asked by April January 18, 2021

Answer

Hi April, Thank you for contacting us with your question. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience you're experiencing with your flooring. The presence of cupping in an installed floor indicates issues with the moisture content of the wood flooring material, specifically higher moisture content at the bottom of the boards than on the face. This higher moisture content causes the bottom of the board to expand more than the face, producing the cupped appearance. This type of moisture imbalance can occur for a variety of reasons, including but not limited to, high or low humidity, jobsite conditions, or improper care and maintenance. The only solution is to correct the condition of your subfloor and replace the affected boards. Again, we apologize for any inconvenience and hope that this information is helpful. Please feel free to contact our Customer Services at 1-866-243-2726, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. EST., if you'd like additional assistance. Have a great day.

Hi Chede, Thank you for reaching out to us with your question. You can use a T-Mold to connect two flooring products together. This will help to differentiate the 2 flooring widths. We also recommend searching for photos on the web for: Two Different Hardwoods Meeting. The results will give you an idea of how you may be able to connect the 2 widths together. We hope that this information is helpful. Have a great day.

This is high gloss, is that 50% gloss ?

Answers

Hi Susan, Thank you for reaching out to us with your question. Our Bruce hardwood products are available with High, Medium and Low Gloss. There is no specific percentage for the gloss levels. A low gloss flooring product will be more of a matte finish vs a high gloss product having more of a shiny finish. You can request a sample of this product, by visiting your local The Home Depot and having a sales associate order one for you from their Contemporary Marketing Group. With a sample, you will be able to see the gloss level of the product. We hope that this information is helpful. Please feel free to contact our customer service at 866-243-2726, Monday through Friday from 9am to 4:30pm, EST.

The sample was the ONLY thing that arrived on time and not damaged. The rest of the experience was an utter DISASTER. Not worth the savings, shop elsewhere.

fabulous product! some of the reviews made us nervous but we decided to see for ourselves. we used Bruce engineered hardwood previously about 15 years ago and loved it. I had never installed actual hardwood before but figured I would give it a try. the install was a lot easier and went a lot faster than we anticipated. as far as other reviews, I had no waste; the rare board that had a bad spot was easily used somewhere else. the boards were very straight so I rarely had to pull any straight to nail down. just can't say enough about how happy we are with this particular hardwood.

Cheap product
Unfortunatly i did not listen to my installer and got this wood from honedepot. It was cheaper than other options but you get what you pay for. Wood had a lot of waste but that is not the main problem. Main issue is those unsightly gabs between the boards. My installers did their best to avoid those hence the hugs amount of waste, but still you can see those ugly gabs everywhere you look....

Hi Esol,

It is always important for us to hear feedback on our products, and thank you for taking the time to enter your comments.

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience you have experienced with your flooring product. Beautiful hardwood floors are a product of nature and therefore not perfect. Every board, even when taken from the same tree, is different in color shade and grading. Our wood floors are manufactured in accordance with accepted industry standards, which permit grading deficiencies. These grading deficiencies may be of a manufacturing or natural type.

If you feel that the issues you have experienced have to do with the manufacturing of the product, we then encourage you to return to The Home Depot store where you purchased your floor. A sales associate will be happy to inspect the flooring product and file a potential claim on your behalf.

We hope that this information is helpful. Please feel free to contact our Customer Services at 1-866-243-2726, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. EST., if you'd like additional assistance.

Good enough for DIY
At this price, I would not complain about this mixed lot of oak wood boards. I’m satisfied with the blend of colors and lengths. We did a DIY installation and only had to discard a few boards. We compensated for the uneven shapes by using them as cut pieces. After the 600 sq ft that we installed, we had less than a box left over. Then we decided the do another room because we were so pleased with the results.

These floors were a perfect match for our client's existing floors. We removed her carpet off her steps and we were able to match her current flooring with these. Would definitely recommend.

I don't know why some of these other reviewers are complaining about this product. I've laid many hardwood floors and I can tell you that Bruce is one of the finest. This install required 24 boxes, I was pleasantly surprised to find that 1 out of every 3 boxes was all long boards. 5', 6' and even 7' boards, all straight as an arrow. At the end of the install I may have had a 5 gallon bucket of waste. I will definitely be recommending this product in the future.

This particular flooring looks great installed and is offered at an attractive price point. Only complaint is that there is a lot of wasted product. Please figure on 15% - 20% overage when ordering. Also, we found the width can vary as much as 1/4." Overall, very satisfied. I have already installed in two bedrooms and will continue with a third bedroom when time permits. I really like the 5" width, looks great and time saving on installation!

Overall, the quality of these boards were fantastic. There was little inconsistency in width between boxes, very few with twist or bow and only a handful that had noticeable filler used in knots. I did come across a few that weren't square on the ends, but a simple cut on the table saw sled remedied them. Installation beyond the first and last rows went surprisingly fast since we ordered the 5" wide planks. Definitely recommend.

Hi Kat,
Wood is the one flooring product that ages gracefully. We appreciate you taking the time to write your comments about our flooring product.
We apologize for any inconvenience, but because wood is a natural product, naturally occurring wood characteristics differ between each sample.
The display is just a small sampling of the hardwood product and while retailers always try to give the best representation of the product, there are such a wide range of natural characteristics that it would be extremely difficult to show everything in just a small display.
Also, differences between the pictures on the website and the actual product could vary due to variations in computer color displays and monitor settings.
Again, we apologize for any inconvenience and hope that this information is helpful. Have a great day. AHFProducts
