Questions & Answers

What is the country of origin for this set?

I'm looking for American made tools. If these are not made in the USA, can you suggest another chisel manufacturer for me?
Asked by: John
USA. Buck bros does sell another imported set, but those are recognizable by the bright orange handles. These are MADE IN THE USA. Some mistaken believe only the wood-handled Buck Bros are of domestic origin. You can read the package, read the tool, or visit the Buck Bros website for verification. Here is that link: https://www.greatnecksaw.com/buckbrothers There is even an episode of "How It's Made" that features these Buck Bros chisels and some other tools they make.

What kind of metal are these made of?

Asked by: JBT81
These are MADE IN THE USA of high carbon tool steel, hardened to Rockwell 59c. That's ideal for edge retention and sharpen-bility.

We tested the steel with a Starrett portable durometer and found they live up to the stated spec of Rockwell 59c. That makes these the perfect balance of hardness ( for edge-retention) but easy sharpen-ability. Spark-testing on a grinding wheels confirms they are made from high-carbon steel, not that gummy chrome vanadium imported metal we find in so many "branded" chisels today. And yes, contrary to what at least one website says, these are MADE IN THE USA. There is even an episode of "How It's Made" that features these chisels and some other tools made by Buck Bros. You can watch that to see what goes into a well-designed and well-made chisel. The edges are nicely tapered and very fine at the tip, which makes them suitable for trimming dovetails. If someone wants to modify these for those extra narrow "fancy fine woodworking" dovetails, that's easy enough to do because they are already so close to perfect dimensions. A few minutes with stones or bench-grinder can taper the edges even further. Chisel length is a matter of personal preference, so some may prefer longer handles. In my experience, shorter handles like these are much easier to control either for hand paring or mallet work. Polycarbonate handles are incredibly durable. I still have similar chisels over forty years old that have endured the most egregious abuse in construction, demo and remodeling work; yet, those handles have never broken or even cracked. Yes, these require some fettling to make them ready for fine work, but for general carpentry, they are already pretty good right from the package. I find it most practical to fettle the two smaller ones well, and leave the larger one as-is for all those rough-&-tumble jobs like removing stickers, trimming large joints in construction lumber, splitting wood lengthwise, cutting open packages, etc. When preparing small ones for fine joinery, I've discovered most of these have a hollow back, not a "belly." That's nice since hollows are MUCH easier to flatten. Either way, you only have to flatten the back ONCE, and the tool is ready for life. Since I have taught dozens of woodworking students about these and recommended them, I have personally honed about a hundred Buck Bros chisels in my classes. Each and every one becomes a fine cutting edge tool with only a little preparation. Although I am a tool hound with a ridiculously large collection of fine chisels ( about three hundred !) by numerous respected brands, I STILL like these, especially for a small portable tool kit. We seldom ( if ever ) need more than two or three chisels. As a carpenter, I only carried the half-inch size in my tool belt. As a woodworker I only use the smaller size for trimming dovetails and mortises. Usually, the larger sizes are only used for flattening internal recesses or trimming oversized joinery such as in timber framing, and these are not designed for that purpose. Therefore, this set is probably all you would ever need. Unless you are a tool-hound and just love fine tools, ( like me ) there is no reason to pay more. I feel this is the best bargain on high-quality USEFUL chisels in practical sizes. You get 95% of everything you'll ever be likely to use, and nothing you don't need. With a decent Japanese Ryoba saw, these chisels, a few marking-measuring-layout tools and a decent plane, you are ready to start woodworking with hand tools on a VERY slim budget. Even seasoned pros find these very high quality and a super bargain price. I cannot overstate what a good deal this is for these quality tools. I grew up in a violin shop using only hand tools. I've used chisels for most of my sixty years on this planet. IMO, these are a fantastic bargain and very high quality. HIGHLY recommended!

As an professional woodworker for over 35 years I've bought many chisels, mostly high end. However, this brand of chisels is my favorite. Over the years I've purchased hundreds of them for my personal use and for my shop. My guys love them too. They are Made in the USA!, they hold an incredible edge-my guys are rough with them. I must admit, i have them professionally sharpened and they take an edge beautifully. The handles are perfect-durable, comfortable and attractive. They are also priced right. If you use these tools as intended and you know what you're doing and take care of them they will last you a very long time! They also have a life time warranty which i never needed. Keep up the good work Buck Brothers. Your History and tools is what helped make America great!
