Answer#1. The inside dimension of the bracket measured looks like 1-3/4". Therefore, it seems that the bar/tubing, pipe should be 1-3/4" outside dimension. You have to fit it to see what works. Make sure the sliding bar meets or exceeds the lifting rating of the hoist. Use the heaviest wall thickness that still gives you 1-3/4" outside dimension square.... #2. However, if you use the hoist in a garage or open rafter building it seems that the bar (or tubing) which slides through the two mounting brackets should be long enough to span across normal rafter beams...that is 2 feet feet 16" OC and 5 feet for 48" OC. The support bar, tubing or hardened steel pipe should be drilled for kotter pin or keeper pin on each side of the hoist body as well as outboard of the supporting rafter to keep the load/hoist from moving laterally when lifting

AnswerHere is what the manual says about using an extension cord: Always use the appropriate extension cord, making sure it is rated for use with power tools. Always be sure the extension cords are in good condition, free of cuts or nicks in the insulation. If using the power tool in an outside area with an extension cord, make sure the cord is rated for outdoor use. I hope that helps. Thank you.

I had purchased the 440lb hoist because I CANNOT get up out of my bath tub from a lying-down soaking position. I had envistioned that a hoist could help me stand up by its lifting power. The first thing I did was READ THE INSTRUCTIONS. It stated clearly that "You must NOT be grounded when using the hoist, or an electrical shock would be the result. " Thus, I never took the hoist out of the box! My congratulations for clear instructions. Also, the young girl at the help line was helpful, and advised mt to return it to the local Home Depot - which I did. GOOD SHOW all around Thanks

Can't give it 5 stars yet because I just used it for the 1st time today and need to see how it lasts. Bought this to lift the front of my garden tractor so I can work on the deck, etc. I also wanted a way to be able to pressure wash under the tractor (which gets caked with gunk). So I had to figure out a way to have a portable frame to hold this thing outside. Looked for frames, etc. couldn't find anything. So came up with the idea of using my xtra large articulating ladder as a frame, but had to rig a way to hold the hoist on it while driving the tractor underneath the ladder. I figure out a solution by wandering around HD today. I bought a 5' 1 5/8" Galvanized steel fence post which the brackets for the hoist fit perfectly over, and then needed something to sit the pole on the rungs of the ladder so it wouldn't roll around. Found a 1-1/2 in. Single-Hole Conduit Support Strap in the electrical department and got two, one for each side of the ladder. Rigged it up and it worked perfectly! So for $11 in extra parts I've got a hoist I can use outside!

I am re-roofing in sections my house. At my age/strength cannot lift matls up on roof nor desire to have someone else do it. I am currently designing a lift assembly using this Buffalo Hoist and a Werner heavy duty ladder. By using a ladder jack (rated 250 lbs.) at a location above the roof line on a ladder set at 75 degrees, an extension arm fit to the ladder jack (to which the hoist will be attached via the existing bolt on brackets for a 1-3/4" bar will allow several shingle bundles and or rolls of ice and water shield to be lifted up and swung onto the roof near the replacement section to be worked. Also by cutting the 4x8' OSB sheets in half the weight is reduced. Lifting materials within the load limit of 250 lbs. will work well for us. A long internet search located this hoist and it seems to do very well as an in- expensive system for a one man with possible helper roofing scheme. With the roof edge line at some 10-11 feet high and the Buffalo cable allowing some 33 min. feet run-out (16.5' double cable assembly) I believe the system will do very well as we only work a small section of roof at a time....

There is a plastic piece that stops the cable latch from working its way onto the real. First time trying to use it the plastic piece broke. I returned the unit the next day. I'll just use the winch on the front of my ATV vs trying to jerry rig something like this to the ceiling of my garage again.
This hoist really helps my elderly parents!

Although this product hasn't been used to hoist game, it has been extremely useful in shuttling groceries and other provisions to my elderly parents.
