Answer This Question

A:  Doesn't say. It's a mystery... And doesn't really work anyway. Not even the pH part. Don't waste your money and time on this thing. I just threw mine out

A:  Burpee's Soil Tester gives quick results of the pH and fertility of the soil without chemicals or batteries. The tester utilizes the chemical reaction known as oxidation-reduction to measure pH within the range of 1 through 9> pH 7 indicates neutral soil. The fertility portion of the tester gives a measure of the combined nutrients that are required for adequate plant growth.

      A:  Fertility and PH

      by|Feb 16, 2023

A:  Fertility - think of it as how much fertilizer is there. The salts and minerals are electrically conductive. Not enough is bad and to much is also bad for plants.

A:  It tests nothing, because it's a piece of junk. The needle never moves.

            Worked Perfectly
I bought this product and followed the instructions on Pantlay's review. It worked perfectly in vinegar.

Tech requires cleaning. Do that & you're good 2 go
Gotta be careful with this one. A little preparation goes a long way. I found another post validating my own experience. Minerals may contaminate the probes and they need cleaning - even new; But we can not fault Burpee for the way metals behave. I suspect most negative reviews on this product are due to probes needing cleaning. I do not know what metals Burpee uses for the oxidation-reduction reactions to drive the meter, but when the probes are very clean you can easily see that each of the 3 probes is a different metal. (That is why the meter does not require batteries. Soil chemistry reacts with the probes enough to power a simple reading.) The probes are very easy to clean. Soak them in vinegar and wipe them off. You may then use the vinegar as a test for functionality. Typical vinegar has a pH of about 2.4. Try other substances. Try mixing acids of various acidity. You'll find the meter responds really well. I'll probably keep a vinegar jar for soaking briefly before use. The meter does not require batteries, responds very quickly to pH changes, is simple to use (flip a switch), and best of all is reusable. Kudos to you, Burpee. Neat product. Burpee has too much on the line with its brand name with seeds to mess the brand up with a bad meter. They came through for me.

Electronic Soil Tester -- Does it really work?
Greetings, After testing the soil in 6 spots in my lawn and getting the same reading in all spots, I because suspicious of the accuracy of this product. To validate I stuck the probes directly in a lemon. A lemon is about 2.3 pH. Check the image. What's wrong with this picture?

I purchased this soil to quickly make a large number of tests of soil fertility. I was going to use this to determine where the more accurate chemical tests should be made. After buying the electronic tester, I read the directions and found that it was to be used on prepared sample rather than just inserting into the ground. I returned the tester without using it.

                  Soil Tester
I didn't see the meter move in either direction when I placed it in my soil and since that was the only soil I had to test I had to just assume it worked.
