    Answer This Question

A:  Hi CJST, yes this StudFinder works on plaster walls. Keep in mind it is powered by magnets. The more material you have between the nail or screw head and the StudFinder the less magnetic pull you feel. Happy stud finding.

A:  Run a circular pattern on the wall. The magnet will be attracted to screws securing the drywall to the studs. Most times it will stay affixed to the wall.

This stud finder is so simple, yet so effective! It finds drywall screws aligned with studs in the wall. I have other stud finder‘s which also work well, but not nearly as simply as this one. Recommended by a cabinet installer who Did some work for me. Highly recommended!

Does Not Work On Plaster and Lath
This didn't work on my old plaster and lath walls, which are 1-2-inch thick plaster over lathe nailed to studs. I happened to be removing a section of the plaster down to the lath, so I had a good excuse to test this out. It didn't stick at all.

Took 2 seconds to find the stud with this. Even smaller and easier than I was expecting, and it hangs in place with ease. This allowed me to hang a dart board and several heavy frames with confidence.

It doesn't work at all on plaster walls. It sticks to metal no problem but as far as finding studs behind thin old plaster you'd probably have much better luck just tapping walls and listening with something. It's also tiny. It looks larger in the online photo but it's only got 2.5 inches of search area. It appears to be two circular magnets that stick well to steel but if you live in an old building with plaster walls this isn't going to work. Electronic stud finders work but this doesn't. It might be fantastic on drywall (no idea) but on plaster it was a let down and will be going back.

                      Simple but effective stud finder!
I was pleasantly surprised at how great this stud finder works. It will never need to replace battery because it's magnetic. It is very simple but works really well. The magnet is strong enough to hold its own weight if the nail it finds is thick enough. My advice is to do a sweeping method left to right from high to low and try to feel for any tugging when it goes over a nail. then go up and down from there to see if it will hit another nail. That'll mean you most likely have found a stud!

Way smaller than expected! It's about the size of a hot wheel. It is a little difficult to find a stud but once found the magnet is strong enough to hold it to the wall. Not sure if I recommend.

Does not work on my plaster walls; which I expected. Since this senses metal very near the surface. A nail head in lath is small and buried under .5" of plaster. Any wall surfacing that is large and needs large headed screws/nails, that are then thin coated, this works great on (e.g. sheetrock, paneling).
