How many tomatoes would one container hold? Is 4 too many?

Asked by gardenista May 23, 2015

I am doing 4 and it works - all 4 are producing nicely. However, next year I’m buying an additional planter and I’ll do 3 each, which I feel will be more manageable.

Does it come with all needed soil & amendments? Soil included ?

The mulch cover is like a tightly woven mesh cloth that keeps the soil from drying out and the soil from being disturbed by rain. The main way it is watered is through the fill tube into the reservoir at the base. It works really well. I have 3 of them and have had great results.

How frequently do you need to add water to the self-watering system?

We have had 95 degree days. I’ve watered once in the evening. I use the self watering feature and it takes 3 gallons to fill the space under the plants.

How to Self water the self waterer?!

I love the self watering feature. The dirt won’t wick if you leave it dry too long. I use a gallon jug each night and pour it into the long tube, which allows the water to go into the space beneath the plants. It takes 3 gallons to fill the space. I think this method works wayyy better than other regular planters because the roots don’t rot and the dirt doesn’t dry out the same way.

Is this water proof on the bottom? My porch is very sunny, however is wood..will this work?

it has drainage holes on each side, I'd just fix a tube to them and route it off your porch to avoid water on the porch. That way you can have it and no water damage.

So, u plant the seeds through the slits, and they grow up through them?

I use a 2" peice of toilet paper roll through the plastic cover fill the roll with soil and plant my seeds water from the top till the plants have the 1st set of real leaves comes out

Do I need to use the Mulch cover? Can I just use this as a regular planter?

I think it depends on where you live. In AZ we have 12 of these planters and have successfully used them for 3 yrs without the covers. Yes the cover traps moisture but unfortunately the roots of my veggies would boil under those covers in our intense heat. I find the secret to these planters is the square-foot gardening technique of planting several plants for a high yield which also covers the soil completely as your plants fill out. This helps the soil retain moisture. I water through the tube only once every 10 days in the hot summer and once every 2 weeks in the winter (we can grow year round here).

How much soil do you need to fill these? (I know the watering system takes up some depth)

I just set mine up with 2 - 1-cubic-foot bags of soil. Instructions say 1.5 cubic feet, but I ended up using all of both bags.

Can I plant 4 jalapeno plants in here or would that be too many? Would only two or three be better?

You can probably plant 4 Jalapeno plants but make sure to keep them trimmed and you make have to put up some stakes with string or chicken wire to hold them up once they get taller. Make sure to pick your peppers when they are ripe.

Did not hold up 1 season
It leaks water out the bottom (not out the overflows). There is a crack in the center of the grow box - see attached image.

I thought the setup was a little bit over kill but I followed the instructions anyway. I like the wicking effect of having the bottom of the tray filled with water. It does keep the soil moist. My radishes love it too.

I was skeptical when I ordered this grow box, but now I can't believe what a difference it makes.
I purchased this planter box to plant some fall tomatoes. I was a little skeptical about how well it would work, but I needed extra space for my plants so I gave it a try. The planter box was easy to assemble. I followed the directions for setting it up on this page, adding "Espoma Garden Lime" and "Vigoro Tomato and Vegetable Garden Plant Food Plus Calcium" to my potting soil for both my burlap sack planter and the "City Pickers" planter box. The tomato seeds were all planted at the same time and transplanted into their respective planters when they were all the same size. The tomatoes in the City Pickers planter box are now at least 3 times larger than the tomatoes in the burlap sack. I've been filling the reservoir for the planter box with water and watering the burlap sack tomatoes everyday. I've posted a picture so that you can see the difference between the two planters. I definitely recommend this planter box, and plan on purchasing another one for next season.

Have to take an average for rating
These are fairly nice containers, I have own much more expensive ones that wicked water much better. I gave it a 2 Star rating because I purchased two of these boxes on July 21st, and one started leaking. I couldn't understand why the planter became dry and light, so quickly. I'll just have to water that container, like a regular planter. For the price they are decent. I do wish the plastic was a little thicker around the top edge, because of the slight slant I have to deal with, the box slightly deforms.

This is the solution when you can no longer get down on your knees. Just put the rolling bed on your deck and then walk along on the ground and they are at eye level. Well built easy to assemble. easy to water. You don't need to water daily. Works for me.

Amazing product! Huge plants!
I'm usually not someone who writes reviews. When it came to this product, I felt I had to! The city pickers garden box is absolutely amazing! I couldn't be happier with the results. My plants are huge, and I have tons of tomatoes! I am a novice gardener, that has not had the best luck, when it comes to growing things. My husband still cannot believe that I grew this! The setup was easy. I followed the instructions exactly, with the lime and the fertilizer. (I planted 3 tomato plants on the edges and did my line of fertilizer across the center.) I highly recommend this product to anyone with a patio Garden. I will definitely purchase more of these next season!

We decided to pick up a couple of these and they've exceeded our expectations! Really a brilliant little invention. The tomato plants we planted in one of them have grown to gigantic proportions! And we've got several herbs, eggplant, and bell peppers growing in the other. Everything is super healthy and growing so much we've had to water them 2x a day, each watering taking in several gallons before hitting the overflow. No complaints so far! I think we went a little overboard with how many plants we planted, but despite that, this patio planter is supplying enough nutrients for everything!

It takes about 2 minutes to set up each box, and another 5 minutes to fill with soil, plant, and water. I have several of these acquired over some years. The self watering feature works efficiently, the reservoir being quite big. I have grown tomatoes, peas, lettuce, carrots, beets, chard, peppers, zucchini all successfully.
